TransCanada’s Keystone Pipeline Network Under Investigation by Federal Regulators<\/a><\/h3>\n

A month after revealing that TransCanada is under a\u00a0compliance review for the Keystone 1 Pipeline<\/a>, the Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety\u00a0Administration(PHMSA<\/span>)<\/a>\u00a0disclosed it is also investigating the\u00a0operations of Keystone\u00a0XL<\/span>‘s southern route, renamed the Gulf Coast Pipeline\u00a0when the project was split in\u00a0half.<\/p>\n

The results of these investigations could play a part in President Obama’s final decision on the Keystone\u00a0XL<\/span>\u00a0permit that TransCanada needs to complete its\u00a0Keystone pipeline network.\u00a0According to the\u00a0State Department\u2019s\u00a0website<\/a>, one of the factors the\u00a0KXL<\/span>\u00a0presidential permit review process focuses\u00a0on is\u00a0compliance with relevant federal\u00a0regulations.<\/p>\n

At\u00a0TransCanada’s latest shareholder meeting<\/a>\u00a0in Calgary,\u00a0Evan Vokes<\/a>, a former employee turned\u00a0whistleblower,<\/a>asked\u00a0CEO<\/span>\u00a0Russ Girling\u00a0why the company had not disclosed the ongoing investigations in its\u00a0current annual report.\u00a0Girling acknowledged that the company is under review,\u00a0but\u00a0assured shareholders\u00a0that\u00a0pipeline safety remains the company’s top\u00a0priority.<\/p>\n

After informing\u00a0stockholders that\u00a0another whistleblower recently disclosed documents<\/a>\u00a0showing that TransCanada\u00a0had broken\u00a0the same rules that Vokes exposed\u00a0in 2010, he asked Girling what TransCanada had done to change things since Vokes worked for the\u00a0company.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo the extent that they [the regulators] find any\u00a0issues with our corporation, we will change to evolve but at the current time there has been nothing put forward that we need to respond to,\u201d Girling said. \u201cAcross 70,000 kilometers of pipeline and 64 billion dollars of rotating equipment,\u00a0there are things we have to address everyday,\u201d\u00a0Girling said, without\u00a0citing\u00a0anything\u00a0specific.<\/p>\n

Vokes alleges TransCanada’s \u201cculture of noncompliance\u201d has not changed. Mounting pipeline failures, including theSuffield Lateral line in Alberta, Canada that failed<\/a><\/p>\n
