California State of Emergency: Up To 105,000 Gallons of Oil Spill in Santa Barbara from Plains All American Pipeline<\/a><\/h3>\n

Up to 105,000 gallons of oil<\/a>\u00a0obtained via offshore drilling have\u00a0spilled from a pipeline owned by\u00a0Plains All American<\/a>\u00a0at Refugio State Beach in Santa Barbara County in California.\u00a0At least 21,000 gallons have poured into the Pacific Ocean<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0spill’s impacts stretch nine miles<\/a>, according to the Associated\u00a0Press.<\/p>\n

As a result, California Governor Jerry Brown has\u00a0declared a state of emergency in Santa Barbara County<\/a>, which he said in a press statement \u201ccuts red tape and helps the state quickly mobilize all available\u00a0resources.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 11-mile Plains American Coastal Pipeline connects Exxon’s Las Flores Canyon facility – which provides basic processing for crude produced from California’s Outer Continental Shelf (OCS<\/span>) – to Plain’s larger Line 63 pipeline system,\u201d the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC<\/span>)\u00a0explained in a blog post<\/a>. \u201c[T]his incident demonstrates the real risks associated with industry plans to inundate California’s coastal waters, pipelines, rail lines and refineries with tar sands\u00a0crudes.\u201d<\/p>\n

The spill, reminding some of the much-bigger\u00a01969 Santa Barbara offshore oil spill<\/a>, comes just several months after the\u00a0Environmental Defense Center filed a lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0against the\u00a0U.S.<\/span>\u00a0Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM<\/span>) for\u00a0secretly permitting<\/a>\u00a0offshore\u00a0hydraulic fracturing (\u201cfracking\u201d)<\/a>\u00a0in the deepwater areas off the coast of California. Both\u00a0ExxonMobil<\/a>and the\u00a0American Petroleum Institute<\/a>\u00a0issued motions to intervene as co-defendants in that case, which\u00a0the judge granted<\/a>.<\/p>\n
