{"id":8332,"date":"2015-05-21T06:48:31","date_gmt":"2015-05-21T11:48:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=8332"},"modified":"2015-05-21T06:48:31","modified_gmt":"2015-05-21T11:48:31","slug":"california-state-of-emergency-up-to-105000-gallons-of-oil-spill-in-santa-barbara-from-plains-all-american-pipeline","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=8332","title":{"rendered":"California State of Emergency: Up To 105,000 Gallons of Oil Spill in Santa Barbara from Plains All American Pipeline"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 id=\"page-title\" class=\"page__title title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/05\/20\/state-of-emergency-105000-gallons-oil-spill-santa-barbara-plains-all-american-pipeline\" target=\"_blank\">California State of Emergency: Up To 105,000 Gallons of Oil Spill in Santa Barbara from Plains All American Pipeline<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-pipeline-santa-barbara-coast-20150519-story.html#page=1\" target=\"_blank\">Up to 105,000 gallons of oil<\/a>\u00a0obtained via offshore drilling have\u00a0spilled from a pipeline owned by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/16172\">Plains All American<\/a>\u00a0at Refugio State Beach in Santa Barbara County in California.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-pipeline-santa-barbara-coast-20150519-story.html#page=1\" target=\"_blank\">At least 21,000 gallons have poured into the Pacific Ocean<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.times-standard.com\/general-news\/20150520\/oil-spill-off-santa-barbara-spans-9-miles\" target=\"_blank\">spill&#8217;s impacts stretch nine miles<\/a>, according to the Associated\u00a0Press.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, California Governor Jerry Brown has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cert1.mail-west.com\/Qyj5D\/janmc7rm5\/yuz\/w2h56315Qgtm\/Qcjrq6k62\/nq5\/05d1866315Qqv\/fph\/qoasup?_c=d%7Cze7pzanwmhlzgt%7C136681q50ucsnbd&amp;_ce=1432171162.d20ca6f806740da858628af78f2c1354\" target=\"_blank\">declared a state of emergency in Santa Barbara County<\/a>, which he said in a press statement \u201ccuts red tape and helps the state quickly mobilize all available\u00a0resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 11-mile Plains American Coastal Pipeline connects Exxon&#8217;s Las Flores Canyon facility &#8211; which provides basic processing for crude produced from California&#8217;s Outer Continental Shelf (<span class=\"caps\">OCS<\/span>) &#8211; to Plain&#8217;s larger Line 63 pipeline system,\u201d the Natural Resources Defense Council (<span class=\"caps\">NRDC<\/span>)\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/switchboard.nrdc.org\/blogs\/aswift\/santa_barbara_pipeline_spill_h.html\" target=\"_blank\">explained in a blog post<\/a>. \u201c[T]his incident demonstrates the real risks associated with industry plans to inundate California&#8217;s coastal waters, pipelines, rail lines and refineries with tar sands\u00a0crudes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spill, reminding some of the much-bigger\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-santa-barbara-oil-spill-1969-20150520-htmlstory.html\" target=\"_blank\">1969 Santa Barbara offshore oil spill<\/a>, comes just several months after the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/Offshore%20Fracking%20in%20CA%20Legal%20Complaint.pdf\">Environmental Defense Center filed a lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0against the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (<span class=\"caps\">BOEM<\/span>) for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/Offshore%20Fracking%20in%20CA%20Lawsuit%20Factsheet.pdf\">secretly permitting<\/a>\u00a0offshore\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/fracking-the-future\/\">hydraulic fracturing (\u201cfracking\u201d)<\/a>\u00a0in the deepwater areas off the coast of California.
