If you look at the police department, their creed is to protect and to serve. A soldier\u2019s mission is to engage his enemy in close combat and kill him. Do we want police officers to have that mentality? Of course not.\u201d\u2014 Arthur Rizer, former civilian police officer and member of the military<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Talk about poor timing. Then again, perhaps it\u2019s brilliant timing.<\/p>\n<p>Only now\u2014after the Departments of Justice, Homeland Security (DHS) and Defense have passed off\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/united-states\/21599349-americas-police-have-become-too-militarised-cops-or-soldiers\">billions of dollars worth of military equipment<\/a><\/u>\u00a0to local police forces, after police agencies have been\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/cops.usdoj.gov\/html\/dispatch\/12-2013\/will_the_growing_militarization_of_our_police_doom_community_policing.asp\">trained in the fine art of war<\/a><\/u>, after SWAT team raids have swelled in number to more than 80,000 a year, after it has become second nature for\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/scienceofus\/2014\/08\/how-militarizing-police-can-increase-violence.html\">local police to look and act like soldiers<\/a><\/u>, after communities have become\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/discover\/10.2307\/3096870\">acclimated to the presence of militarized police<\/a><\/u>\u00a0patrolling their streets, after Americans have been taught compliance at the end of a police gun or taser, after lower income neighborhoods have been\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/nation\/la-na-obama-military-equipment-police-20150518-story.html\">transformed into war zones<\/a><\/u>, after hundreds if not thousands of unarmed Americans have lost their lives at the hands of police who shoot first and ask questions later, after a\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/media.law.uark.edu\/arklawreview\/2015\/05\/15\/militarization-of-school-police-one-route-on-the-school-to-prison-pipeline\/\">whole generation of young Americans<\/a><\/u>has learned to march in lockstep with the government\u2019s dictates\u2014only now does President Obama lift a hand to\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/mojo\/2015\/05\/obama-police-military-equipment\">limit the number of military weapons<\/a><\/u>\u00a0being passed along to local police departments.<\/p>\n<p>Not all, mind you, just\u00a0<em>some<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Talk about too little, too late.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Militarization Is More Than Tanks and Rifles: It\u2019s a Cultural Disease, Acclimating the Citizenry to Life in a Police State \u201cIf we\u2019re training cops as soldiers, giving them equipment like soldiers, dressing them up as soldiers,\u00a0when are they going to pick up the mentality of soldiers?
