Its function is to obey orders, not originate them.\u201d \u2015 Mark Twain<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>How many Americans have actually bothered to read the\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.gov\/exhibits\/charters\/constitution_transcript.html\">Constitution<\/a><\/u>, let alone the first ten amendments to the Constitution, the\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.gov\/exhibits\/charters\/bill_of_rights_transcript.html\">Bill of Rights<\/a><\/u>\u00a0(a quick read at 462 words)?<\/p>\n<p>Take a few minutes and read those words for yourself\u2014rather than having some court or politician translate them for you\u2014and you will be under no illusion about where to draw the line when it comes to speaking your mind, criticizing your government, defending what is yours, doing whatever you want on your own property, and keeping the government\u2019s nose out of your private affairs.<\/p>\n<p>In an age of overcriminalization, where the average citizen unknowingly commits\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052748704471504574438900830760842\">three crimes a day<\/a><\/u>, and even the most mundane activities such as\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2015\/03\/03\/overcriminalization-supreme-court-decision-fish-case-column\/24276525\/\">fishing<\/a><\/u>\u00a0and gardening are regulated, government officials are constantly telling Americans what not to do. Yet it was not always this way. It used to be \u201cwe the people\u201d telling the government what it could and could not do.
