With a new government in place much sooner than expected, what do the next five years hold?<\/p>\n<p>The appointment of Amber Rudd as the new Energy Secretary was<a title=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2015\/may\/11\/green-groups-welcome-amber-rudd-climate-secretary?&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=nefoundation&amp;utm_content=1+-+welcomed+by+environmentalists&amp;utm_campaign=Energy+Crunch+-+15+May+2015&amp;source=Energy+Crunch+-+15\" href=\"http:\/\/www.neweconomics.org\/page\/m\/2edb5007\/7ebe0308\/6e1e40b9\/5d3ba59\/2462064355\/VEsH\/\">welcomed by environmentalists<\/a>, with the Renewable Energy Association hailing her as \u201ca champion of renewables and low-carbon economy\u201d. But then, as her predecessor Ed Davey found, policy in this critical area is not exclusively controlled by the Secretary of State.<\/p>\n<p>On low-carbon policy the Conservative manifesto is mixed: it pledges to support value for money renewables while simultaneously promising to abolish financial support for new onshore wind farms \u2013 one of the cheapest low carbon energy options. The new government is also a staunch supporter of fracking \u2013 but\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/df530694-f8cb-11e4-be00-00144feab7de.html?&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=nefoundation&amp;utm_content=2+-+those&amp;utm_campaign=Energy+Crunch+-+15+May+2015&amp;source=Energy+Crunch+-+15+May+2015\" href=\"http:\/\/www.neweconomics.org\/page\/m\/2edb5007\/7ebe0308\/6e1e40b9\/5d3ba52\/2462064355\/VEsE\/\">those<\/a>\u00a0hoping to replicate US expansion would be wise to notice the tide is turning (see our chart of the week).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Whether the fall in US shale output is temporary or terminal remains to be seen, but at least one prominent financier is\u00a0<a title=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-05-04\/shale-oil-explorers-plunge-after-einhorn-slams-fracking-cost?&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=nefoundation&amp;utm_content=3+-+scathing+about+the+industryrsquos+prospe&amp;utm_campaign=Energy+Crunch+-+15+May+2015&amp;sour\" href=\"http:\/\/www.neweconomics.org\/page\/m\/2edb5007\/7ebe0308\/6e1e40b9\/5d3ba4a\/2462064355\/VEsF\/\">scathing about the industry\u2019s prospects<\/a>.
