{"id":7992,"date":"2015-05-10T10:45:02","date_gmt":"2015-05-10T15:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7992"},"modified":"2015-05-10T10:45:02","modified_gmt":"2015-05-10T15:45:02","slug":"transformer-explosion-at-the-indian-point-nuclear-facility-near-new-york-is-contained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7992","title":{"rendered":"Transformer Explosion At The Indian Point Nuclear Facility Near New York Is &#8216;Contained&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2015-05-09\/transformer-explosion-indian-point-nuclear-facility-near-new-york-contained\" target=\"_blank\">Transformer Explosion At The Indian Point Nuclear Facility Near New York Is &#8216;Contained&#8217;<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The words &#8220;explosion&#8221;, &#8220;New York&#8221;, &#8220;black smoke&#8221;, and &#8220;nuclear&#8221; strike fear into the heart of most people but according to Entergy &#8211; who runs Indian Point,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;the nuclear facility has been safely shutdown following a transformer failure.&#8221;<\/strong>Reports of a loud blast at the nuclear facility just 38 miles north of New York, with dense black smoke rising from Unit 3 are no concern and represent &#8220;no danger to public health and safety.&#8221; The plant, which dates back to 1962 (although the currently used reactors were installed later in the 70s) had\u00a0<strong>just been brought back online on Friday, after being shut down for a steam leak repair<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Indian is just 38 miles north of New York City,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/rt.com\/news\/257225-indian-point-nuke-plant-blast\/\">and as RT reports,<\/a>\u00a0<strong>produces some 25 percent of New York City\u2019s and Westchester\u2019s electricity.<\/strong>\u00a0The combined power generated by the two units amounts to over 2000 megawatts. The facility employs some 1,600 people.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2015\/05\/20150509_nuke1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/user3303\/imageroot\/2015\/05\/20150509_nuke1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The plant has been a subject of controversy due to its proximity to NYC<\/strong>. Several environmental groups have been calling for Indian Point\u2019s permanent shutdown for years.
