{"id":7771,"date":"2015-05-02T06:59:30","date_gmt":"2015-05-02T11:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7771"},"modified":"2015-05-02T06:59:30","modified_gmt":"2015-05-02T11:59:30","slug":"dozens-arrested-in-anti-capitalism-may-day-protest-in-montreal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7771","title":{"rendered":"Dozens arrested in anti-capitalism May Day protest in Montreal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"story-headline\">\n<h3 id=\"yui_3_11_0_1_1430565588754_30\" class=\"story-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/dozens-arrested-in-anti-capitalism-may-day-protest-in-montreal-1.3058316\" target=\"_blank\">Dozens arrested in anti-capitalism May Day protest in Montreal<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"story-deck\"><strong>Eighty-four protesters arrested, Montreal police use tear gas to disperse demonstrators and bystanders<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Police arrested 84 people, including 27 on criminal charges, and used tear gas to disperse demonstrators at a night-time protest in downtown Montreal organized by a local anti-capitalist group called CLAC.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of people\u00a0gathered at\u00a0at\u00a0least three different locations around the city,\u00a0well before the protests officially got underway at 7 p.m. ET.<\/p>\n<p>The group called on protesters to cause the &#8220;maximum disruption possible&#8221; to businesses downtown.<\/p>\n<p>However, the majority of the crowd were people carrying anti-austerity messages with no intention of vandalism or violence.<\/p>\n<p>By 7:10 p.m., police had already declared the demonstrations illegal and began ordering protesters to disperse.<\/p>\n<p>As demonstrators moved up McGill College Avenue from de Maisonneuve Boulevard, police began launching rounds of tear gas.<\/p>\n<h2>Children\u00a0gassed by police<\/h2>\n<p>Families and bystanders were among those gassed early in the demonstration. One woman said she brought her family to the protest thinking\u00a0it would be peaceful.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Suddenly, there was tear gas all around us,&#8221; the woman, who did not give her name,\u00a0said, as one of her children cried in the background.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have a baby with us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Montreal police Sgt.
