Is Merkel a CIA Asset?<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

The claims that Merkel\u2019s government knew about German state intelligence spying on behalf of the Americans against the country’s own industrial interests raise disturbing questions about the i ntegrity of German government leaders.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The apparent betrayal of\u00a0German national interests by\u00a0Chancellor Angela Merkel is not only evident over\u00a0the recent industrial spying scandal on\u00a0behalf of\u00a0America. The slavish pursuit by\u00a0Merkel of\u00a0Washington’s anti-Russian policy over\u00a0Ukraine\u00a0\u2014 in\u00a0contradistinction to\u00a0her country’s national interests\u00a0\u2014 also cogently suggests that the chancellor is serving a foreign master.<\/span>Recent reports that German state intelligence was spying on\u00a0behalf of\u00a0the Americans against\u00a0the country’s own industrial interests are bad enough. But then added to\u00a0that are claims that the government of\u00a0Chancellor Angela Merkel knew about\u00a0the espionage\u00a0\u2014 and turned a blind eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This raises disturbing questions about\u00a0the integrity of\u00a0German government leaders, and primarily Angela Merkel. Is Merkel an asset for\u00a0American intelligence, serving the geopolitical interests of\u00a0Washington rather than\u00a0the good of\u00a0her own nation, or the wider good of\u00a0Europe?<\/span><\/p>\n

The news story in\u00a0question refers to\u00a0reports in\u00a0the German media last week of\u00a0how Germany’s Federal Intelligence (BND) collaborated with\u00a0the US National Security Agency (NSA) in\u00a0spying on\u00a0multinational European defence companies, including EADS and Eurocopter. The specific eavesdropping on\u00a0these firms\u00a0\u2014 in\u00a0which Germany has major national economic interests\u00a0\u2014 reportedly dates back to\u00a02008. It is inconceivable that the highest levels of\u00a0German government, including Chancellor Merkel\u00a0\u2014 did not know about\u00a0the industrial espionage. Yet Merkel appears to\u00a0have countenanced the illegal activity, even though such activity would have vitiated German national interests, affording advantage to\u00a0American competitors.<\/span><\/p>\n
