A mandatory inspection test revealed a section of the pipeline&#8217;s wall had corroded 95%, leaving it paper-thin in one area (one-third the thickness of a dime) and dangerously thin in three other\u00a0places, leading TransCanada to immediately shut it down. The cause of the corrosion is being kept from the public by federal regulators and\u00a0TransCanada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is highly unusual for a pipeline not yet two years old to experience such deep corrosion issues,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2012\/10\/17\/transcanada-whistleblower-confirms-why-his-company-can-t-be-trusted-pipeline-safety\">Evan Vokes<\/a>, a former TransCanada pipeline engineer-turned-whistleblower, told\u00a0DeSmogBlog. \u201cSomething very severe happened that the public needs to know\u00a0about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When TransCanada shut the line down, the company and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (<span class=\"caps\">PHMSA<\/span>) told the press that the shutdown was due to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/10\/18\/transcanada-keystone-pipeline-shut-down_n_1982478.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cpossible safety Issues.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0And although an engineer\u00a0from\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">PHMSA<\/span>\u00a0was sent to the site where TransCanada was digging up the pipeline in Missouri, no further information has\u00a0been made available\u00a0publicly.<\/p>\n<p>Only after DeSmogBlog made a Freedom of Information Act (<span class=\"caps\">FOIA<\/span>) request to\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">PHMSA<\/span>\u00a0in August 2013 \u2014 which the agency partially responded to this April \u2014 was the information revealing the pipeline had deeply corroded in multiple spots exposed.
