Scottish Government’s Position on Fracking Remains Unclear<\/a><\/h3>\n

The Scottish Government have been accused of kicking the issue of fracking into the long\u00a0grass.<\/p>\n

Alex Salmond said recently:<\/a>\u00a0\u201cI think fracking has a long way to go before it convinces populations across the country. Fracking in a heavily populated area is a totally different proposition from fracking elsewhere and I think the Scottish government is pursuing a wise policy on\u00a0it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The government has been told that the technology is necessary to secure the future of the country\u2019s energy industry, but it seems it will not make the conclusions of its own research known until after the general\u00a0election.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0SNP<\/span>\u2019s\u00a0Manifesto<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Scottish National Party’s (SNP<\/span>) manifesto released this week also fails to bring clarity to the\u00a0SNP<\/span>\u2019s stance on\u00a0fracking.<\/p>\n

The manifesto<\/a>, launched on Monday, had only one sentence dedicated to the topic of fracking. It said: \u201cWe will continue to support a moratorium on\u00a0fracking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the manifesto, however, the\u00a0SNP<\/span>\u00a0show strong support for the oil and gas industry in underpinning the Scottish\u00a0economy.<\/p>\n

Nicola Sturgeon\u2019s private meeting<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0INEOS<\/span>\u00a0Chairman Jim Ratcliffe, held on the same day as the announcement of the moratorium in January, further clouds the\u00a0SNP<\/span>\u2019s overall position on\u00a0fracking.<\/p>\n

After this meeting,\u00a0INEOS<\/span>\u00a0made a complete U-turn saying they now supported the moratorium, despite having been against it prior to the\u00a0meeting.<\/p>\n

However, it should be noted that the\u00a0SNP<\/span>‘s position on fracking is stronger than other main parties. The Lib Dems, Labour and Conservatives are all\u00a0calling for a regulated industry<\/a><\/p>\n
