{"id":7419,"date":"2015-04-19T07:16:53","date_gmt":"2015-04-19T12:16:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7419"},"modified":"2015-04-19T07:16:53","modified_gmt":"2015-04-19T12:16:53","slug":"the-greek-white-knight-emerges-putin-to-give-athens-e5-billion-for-advance-gas-pipeline-fees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7419","title":{"rendered":"The Greek &#8220;White Knight&#8221; Emerges: Putin To Give Athens \u20ac5 Billion For Advance Gas Pipeline Fees"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2015-04-18\/greek-white-knight-emerges-putin-give-athens-\u20ac5-billion-advance-gas-pipeline-fees\" target=\"_blank\">The Greek &#8220;White Knight&#8221; Emerges: Putin To Give Athens \u20ac5 Billion For Advance Gas Pipeline Fees<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>With Greece teetering on the edge of insolvency and forced to raid pension and most other public funds, ahead of another month of heavy IMF repayments which has prompted even the ECB to speculate Greece\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/news\/2015-04-17\/ecb-considering-parallel-greek-currency\">should introduce a parallel &#8220;IOU&#8221; currency<\/a>, a white knight has appeared out of nowhere for Greece, one who may offer $5 billion in urgently needed cash.\u00a0<strong>The white knight is none other than Vladimir Putin.\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cJust because Greece is debt-ridden, this does not mean it is bound hand<br \/>\nand foot, and has no independent foreign policy,\u201d Putin said previously.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/wirtschaft\/unternehmen\/griechenland-und-russland-syriza-hofft-auf-pipeline-milliarden-a-1029328.html\">Spiegel<\/a>, citing a senior figure in the ruling Syriza party, Greece is poised to sign a gas deal with Russia as early as Tuesday which could bring up to \u20ac5 billion into the depleted Greek coffers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/economics\/11546965\/Russian-gas-deal-will-net-Greece-5bn-and-turn-the-tide.html\">move could now &#8220;turn the tide<\/a>&#8221; for the debt-stricken country according to a senior Greek official.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2015\/04\/18\/us-eurozone-greece-russia-gas-idUSKBN0N90CR20150418\">Reuters adds<\/a>, during a visit to Moscow earlier this month, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras expressed interest in participating in a pipeline that would bring Russian gas to Europe via Turkey and Greece.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"quote_start\">Under the proposed deal, Greece would receive advance funds from Russia based on expected future profits linked to the pipeline. The Greek energy minister said last week that Athens would repay Moscow after 2019, when the pipeline is expected to start operating.<\/div>\n<p>Greek government officials were not immediately available to comment on the Spiegel report.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, this being Greece, the probability of actual repayment is negligible: after all the likelihood of a Greek default is astronomical, and \u20ac5 billion will do little to change the mechanics of Greek debt sustainability.
