The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/1873704-dep-communications-regarding-national-geographic.html#document\/p2\/a213435\" target=\"_blank\">scientist responded<\/a>\u00a0\u201cI know the drill,\u201d suggesting that a prohibition on mentioning climate change was well established in the\u00a0department.<\/p>\n<p>The exchange came in response to a request for an interview from National Geographic. In a report to her superiors, the \u201cadministrator of external affairs\u201d for the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">DEP<\/span>, who was in charge of approving the interview request,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/1873703-dep-communications-regarding-national-geographic.html#document\/p2\/a213434\" target=\"_blank\">expressed confidence<\/a>\u00a0that the scientist would \u201cstay on message,\u201d but offered to be \u201cmore hands on with this because of the sensitivity,\u201d should her supervisors\u00a0insist.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/08\/us\/florida-finds-itself-in-the-eye-of-the-storm-on-climate-change.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0repeatedly warned<\/a>\u00a0rising sea levels pose a serious threat to Florida&#8217;a coast. A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/03\/08\/florida-global-warming_n_6826824.html\" target=\"_blank\">Southeast Florida Regional Climate Compact<\/a>\u00a0paper found that water in the Miami area could rise by 2 feet by the year 2060, due to climate change.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>This latest evidence of a ban on mentioning climate change is congruent with earlier reports that Governor Rick Scott forbade Florida agencies from discussing the matter. As was first uncovered by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/fcir.org\/2015\/03\/08\/in-florida-officials-ban-term-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\">Florida Center for Investigative Reporting<\/a>,\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">DEP<\/span>\u00a0officials were told not to use the terms \u201cclimate change,\u201d \u201cglobal warming,\u201d or \u201csustainability\u201d once Rick Scott was elected governor in 2011.
