Newly Released Documents Provide Further Indication That Florida Officials Were Directed Not To Talk About Climate Change<\/a><\/h3>\n

In an email exchange from April of 2014 obtained by a records request, a communications official working for the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP<\/span>) in Florida\u00a0instructed a scientist<\/a>\u00a0to \u201cmake no claims as to cause\u201d of Florida\u2019s sea level rise. The\u00a0scientist responded<\/a>\u00a0\u201cI know the drill,\u201d suggesting that a prohibition on mentioning climate change was well established in the\u00a0department.<\/p>\n

The exchange came in response to a request for an interview from National Geographic. In a report to her superiors, the \u201cadministrator of external affairs\u201d for the\u00a0DEP<\/span>, who was in charge of approving the interview request,expressed confidence<\/a>\u00a0that the scientist would \u201cstay on message,\u201d but offered to be \u201cmore hands on with this because of the sensitivity,\u201d should her supervisors\u00a0insist.<\/p>\n

Scientists have\u00a0repeatedly warned<\/a>\u00a0rising sea levels pose a serious threat to Florida’a coast. A\u00a0Southeast Florida Regional Climate Compact<\/a>\u00a0paper found that water in the Miami area could rise by 2 feet by the year 2060, due to climate change.<\/p>\n

This latest evidence of a ban on mentioning climate change is congruent with earlier reports that Governor Rick Scott forbade Florida agencies from discussing the matter. As was first uncovered by the\u00a0Florida Center for Investigative Reporting<\/a>,\u00a0DEP<\/span>\u00a0officials were told not to use the terms \u201cclimate change,\u201d \u201cglobal warming,\u201d or \u201csustainability\u201d once Rick Scott was elected governor in 2011. Rick Scott, a republican, has been a long time denier of climate change\u00a0science.<\/p>\n

As the\u00a0New Republic<\/a>\u00a0reported:<\/p>\n

a reporter asked Scott whether man-made climate change \u201cis significantly affecting the weather, the climate.\u201d Scott tried to change the subject and replied, \u201cWell, I’m not a scientist<\/a>.\u201d When asked by the Tampa Bay Times in 2010 whether he believed in climate change, Scott simply replied, \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
