{"id":7311,"date":"2015-04-15T05:51:25","date_gmt":"2015-04-15T10:51:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7311"},"modified":"2015-04-15T05:51:25","modified_gmt":"2015-04-15T10:51:25","slug":"is-the-fracking-lobby-setting-the-eu-energy-agenda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7311","title":{"rendered":"Is the Fracking Lobby Setting the EU Energy Agenda?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/desmog.uk\/2015\/04\/15\/fracking-lobby-setting-eu-energy-policy-agenda\" target=\"_blank\">Is the Fracking Lobby Setting the EU Energy Agenda?<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>A European expert panel on unconventional hydrocarbons has been almost entirely taken over by the fracking industry\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foeeurope.org\/sites\/default\/files\/shale_gas\/2015\/carte_blanche_for_fracking_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">reveals a new investigation<\/a>by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foeeurope.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Friends of the Earth (FoE) Europe<\/a>\u00a0and the<a href=\"http:\/\/corporateeurope.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Corporate Europe Observatory<\/a>\u00a0(<span class=\"caps\">CEO<\/span>).<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/jrc\/en\/event\/conference\/launch-event-european-science-and-technology-network-unconventional-hydrocarbon-extraction\" target=\"_blank\">advisory group, set up by the European Commission,<\/a>\u00a0is tasked with assessing ongoing fracking projects in Europe along with the safety and appropriateness of other unconventional technologies. Of those not employed by the Commission, over 70 percent of the panel have financial ties to the fracking\u00a0industry.<\/p>\n<p>The panel\u2019s five leading chairmen include two executives from shale firms Cuadrilla and ConocoPhillips, two officials from pro-shale ministries in the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">UK<\/span>\u00a0and Poland, and a director of\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">IFP<\/span>\u00a0Energies nouvelles, who is also an advisor to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foeeurope.org\/fracking-brussels-whos-who-shalegas-lobby-240714\" target=\"_blank\">Shale Gas Europe lobby group<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Less than 10 percent of those on the panel represent civil society and environmentalists.
