{"id":7264,"date":"2015-04-12T08:21:01","date_gmt":"2015-04-12T13:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7264"},"modified":"2015-04-12T08:21:01","modified_gmt":"2015-04-12T13:21:01","slug":"quebec-city-climate-change-march-draws-25000-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7264","title":{"rendered":"Quebec City climate-change march draws 25,000 people"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"story-headline\">\n<h3 class=\"story-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/quebec-city-climate-change-march-draws-25-000-people-1.3029493\" target=\"_blank\">Quebec City climate-change march draws 25,000 people<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"story-deck\"><strong>March is in advance of premiers&#8217; summit next wee<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0climate-change march drew about 25,000 people to the streets of Quebec City on Saturday, as protesters try to encourage premiers to take a tougher stance on climate and pipeline regulations.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/1.3023907\">Energy East pipeline project changes encouraging, expert says<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/1.3026816\">Dramatic photos of Vancouver oil spill spark pipeline outrage on social media<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The march was organized by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/act-on-climate.ca\/\">Act On Climate<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0a coalition of groups including environmental groups, unions, students and aboriginal groups.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s\u00a0in preparation for a premiers&#8217; summit on climate change which will take place on Tuesday, April 14.<\/p>\n<p>The focus is a greener strategy for Canada&#8217;s provinces and territories.<\/p>\n<p>About 100 buses were driven\u00a0to the rally with many passengers\u00a0from different parts of Quebec. Once there, they marched for about three kilometres to the National Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters wore red and arranged themselves\u00a0so that from the sky\u00a0it looked like a bursting thermometer.<\/p>\n<h2>Protesters against pipelines<\/h2>\n<p>High on the list of demands from the group is stopping the building of new pipelines, including Keystone, Energy East, and Northern Gateway.<\/p>\n<p>Serge Simon, the grand chief of Kanesatake, said Quebec environmentalists should look to British Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You could take the example of the B.C. premier [Christy Clark]. The B.C. premier had a lot of pressure brought to them and they put these conditions that stopped Northern Gateway,&#8221;\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_11_0_1_1428842700884_28\">&#8220;The premier of Quebec [Philippe Couillard] can do the same thing if he stops catering to big corporate interests.
