{"id":7242,"date":"2015-04-11T07:03:23","date_gmt":"2015-04-11T12:03:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7242"},"modified":"2015-04-11T07:03:23","modified_gmt":"2015-04-11T12:03:23","slug":"secrecy-shrouds-unknown-role-of-top-uk-government-official","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7242","title":{"rendered":"SECRECY SHROUDS UNKNOWN ROLE OF TOP UK GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\">SECRECY SHROUDS UNKNOWN ROLE OF TOP UK GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL<\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">The British government is refusing to disclose the job title and taxpayer-funded salary of one of the most senior law enforcement officials in the United Kingdom, claiming the details have to be kept a secret for security reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">Cressida Dick (pictured above) was formerly one of the highest ranking officers at London\u2019s Metropolitan Police, the largest police force in the U.K., where she headed the Specialist Operations unit and oversaw a<a class=\"western\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/uknews\/crime\/10492749\/Guardian-journalists-could-face-criminal-charges-over-Edward-Snowden-leaks.html\">controversial criminal investigation<\/a>\u00a0into journalists who reported on Edward Snowden\u2019s leaked documents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">In December, Dick\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-30277353\">announced<\/a>\u00a0she was leaving the London police to take up a top job with the government\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/foreign-commonwealth-office\">Foreign Office<\/a>. But her new role is being shrouded in intense secrecy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">In response to Freedom of Information Act requests from this reporter, the Foreign Office has repeatedly declined to disclose even the most basic details about Dick\u2019s position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">Government officials handling the requests say that members of the public are not entitled to know anything about Dick\u2019s job title, role and responsibilities, or the amount of money she is earning \u2013 despite the fact that specific salaries earned by senior Foreign Office officials, as well as their job titles, are usually\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/foreign-office-staff-and-salary-data\">routinely made available<\/a>\u00a0online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-US\">In two separate refusal letters issued in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/1814622-uk-foreign-office-cressida-dick-foia-response-12.html\">February<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/1814623-uk-foreign-office-cressida-dick-foia-response-13.html\">March<\/a>, the Foreign Office said that it would not hand over the information because it relates to \u201cbodies dealing with security matters,\u201d and so the government was \u201cnot obliged to consider the public interest in disclosure.\u201d It would acknowledge only that Dick has been appointed in a \u201cdirector general\u201d position.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SECRECY SHROUDS UNKNOWN ROLE OF TOP UK GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL The British government is refusing to disclose the job title and taxpayer-funded salary of one of the most senior law enforcement officials in the United Kingdom, claiming the details have to be kept a secret for security reasons.
