{"id":7230,"date":"2015-04-11T06:48:06","date_gmt":"2015-04-11T11:48:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7230"},"modified":"2015-04-11T06:48:06","modified_gmt":"2015-04-11T11:48:06","slug":"wisconsin-climate-change-gag-order-part-of-broader-industry-tied-attacks-on-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7230","title":{"rendered":"Wisconsin Climate Change Gag Order Part of Broader Industry-Tied Attacks on Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/04\/10\/wisconsin-climate-change-gag-order-industy-tied-broader-attack\" target=\"_blank\">Wisconsin Climate Change Gag Order Part of Broader Industry-Tied Attacks on Science<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>On April 7,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bcpl.wisconsin.gov\/category.asp?linkcatid=2830&amp;linkid=1442&amp;locid=145\" target=\"_blank\">Wisconsin&#8217;s Board of Commissioners of Public Lands<\/a>\u00a0voted 2-1 to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-04-08\/for-some-wisconsin-state-workers-climate-change-isn-t-something-you-can-talk-about\" target=\"_blank\">ban those employed by the agency from doing any work pertaining to climate change or global warming<\/a>\u00a0while doing public lands related\u00a0work.<\/p>\n<p>Although the story was covered by<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2015\/apr\/07\/wisconsin-republicans-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\">multiple<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/blue-marble\/2015\/04\/another-state-agency-just-banned-words-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\">media<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/livewire\/wisconsin-ban-climate-change-public-lands\" target=\"_blank\">outlets<\/a>, lost in the public discussion so far is how the vote fits into the broader multi-front industry attack in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2014\/07\/08\/dairyland-petrostate-wisconsin-oil-rail-routes-published-first-time\">America&#8217;s Dairyland-turned-Petro State<\/a>\u00a0and which industry interests may have played a role in the\u00a0vote.<\/p>\n<p>The historical roots of the vote appear to trace back to an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/democrats.energycommerce.house.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/Testimony-Tia-Nelson-FC-ACES-2009-4-24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">April 2009 congressional testimony<\/a>\u00a0given by Tia Nelson,\u00a0executive secretary for the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands and\u00a0daughter of former Wisconsin Democratic Governor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gaylord_Nelson\" target=\"_blank\">Gaylord Nelson<\/a>, in favor of passage of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Clean_Energy_and_Security_Act\" target=\"_blank\">American Clean Energy Security Act of 2009<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That bill is\u00a0better known as the controversial and eventually nixed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php\/Waxman-Markey_Climate_Bill\" target=\"_blank\">Waxman-Markey climate bill<\/a>, a bill opposed vigorously by the fossil fuel industry (and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oR3ELe4qPAU\" target=\"_blank\">some environmentalists, too<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Gaylord Nelson served as the founder of Earth Day and is the namesake for both the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nelson.wisc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of Wisconsin-Madison&#8217;s Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies<\/a>, as well as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Governor_Nelson_State_Park\" target=\"_blank\">Gaylord Nelson State Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tia Nelson, when she testified in front of congress, sat as co-chair of former Wisconsin Democratic Governor Jim Doyle&#8217;s global warming task force. The task force\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20070212235424\/http:\/\/www.wisgov.state.wi.us\/journal_media_detail.asp?locid=19&amp;prid=2504\" target=\"_blank\">announced during Doyle&#8217;s 2007 State of the State address<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0published a report in July 2008 titled, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20081114002623\/http:\/\/dnr.wi.gov\/environmentprotect\/gtfgw\/documents\/Final_Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Wisconsin\u2019s Strategy for Reducing Global Warming<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That report was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisdc.org\/pr090308.php\" target=\"_blank\">derided by environmentalists<\/a>\u00a0for coming out in support of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.prwatch.org\/news\/2009\/03\/8291\/wisconsins-balance-power-campaign-repeal-nuclear-moratorium\" target=\"_blank\">lifting the state&#8217;s nuclear energy moratorium<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelbest.com\/files\/upload\/Business-Opposition-Letter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">by corporate interests<\/a>\u00a0and climate change deniers like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/directory\/vocabulary\/7681\">State Policy Network<\/a>\u00a0(<span class=\"caps\">SPN<\/span>) \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/stinktanks.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">stink tank<\/a>\u201d members\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sourcewatch.org\/index.php\/Wisconsin_Policy_Research_Institute\" target=\"_blank\">Wisconsin Public Research Institute (<span class=\"caps\">WPRI<\/span>)<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2013\/dec\/05\/state-conservative-groups-assault-education-health-tax\" target=\"_blank\">Beacon Hill Institute<\/a>, which co-authored a November 2009 report titled, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wpri.org\/WPRI\/Reports\/2009\/The-Economics-of-Climate-Change-Proposals-in-Wisconsin.htm\" target=\"_blank\">The Economics of Climate Change Proposals in Wisconsin<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wisconsin Climate Change Gag Order Part of Broader Industry-Tied Attacks on Science On April 7,\u00a0Wisconsin&#8217;s Board of Commissioners of Public Lands\u00a0voted 2-1 to\u00a0ban those employed by the agency from doing any work pertaining to climate change or global warming\u00a0while doing public lands related\u00a0work.
