{"id":7160,"date":"2015-04-09T06:21:47","date_gmt":"2015-04-09T11:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7160"},"modified":"2015-04-09T06:21:47","modified_gmt":"2015-04-09T11:21:47","slug":"dea-global-surveillance-dragnet-exposed-access-to-data-likely-continues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7160","title":{"rendered":"DEA GLOBAL SURVEILLANCE DRAGNET EXPOSED; ACCESS TO DATA LIKELY CONTINUES"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2015\/04\/08\/dea-surveillance-phone-records-crisscross-nsa\/\" target=\"_blank\">DEA GLOBAL SURVEILLANCE DRAGNET EXPOSED; ACCESS TO DATA LIKELY CONTINUES<\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-GB\">Secret mass surveillance conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration is falling under renewed scrutiny after fresh revelations about the broad scope of the agency\u2019s electronic spying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-GB\">On Tuesday,\u00a0<i>USA Today<\/i>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2015\/04\/07\/dea-bulk-telephone-surveillance-operation\/70808616\/\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that for more than two decades, dating back to 1992, the DEA and the Justice Department \u201camassed logs of virtually all telephone calls from the USA to as many as 116 countries linked to drug trafficking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-GB\">Citing anonymous current and former officials \u201cinvolved with the operation,\u201d\u00a0<i>USA Today<\/i>\u00a0reported that Americans\u2019 calls were logged between the United States and targeted countries and regions including Canada, Mexico, and Central and South America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-GB\">The DEA\u2019s data dragnet was apparently shut down by attorney general Eric Holder in September 2013. But on Wednesday, following\u00a0<i>USA Today<\/i>\u2018s report, Human Rights Watch\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2015\/04\/08\/us-usa-dea-lawsuit-idUSKBN0MZ1F720150408\">launched a lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0against the DEA over its bulk collection of phone records and is seeking a retrospective declaration that the surveillance was unlawful.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-GB\">The latest revelations shine more light on the broad scope of the DEA\u2019s involvement in mass surveillance programs, which can be traced back to a secret program named \u201cProject Crisscross\u201d in the early 1990s, as\u00a0<i>The Intercept<\/i>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2014\/08\/25\/icreach-nsa-cia-secret-google-crisscross-proton\/\">previously revealed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-GB\">Documents from National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden,<a href=\"https:\/\/firstlook.org\/theintercept\/2014\/08\/25\/icreach-nsa-cia-secret-google-crisscross-proton\/\">published by\u00a0<em>The Intercept<\/em><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/a>in August last year, showed that the DEA was involved in collecting and sharing billions of phone records alongside agencies such as the NSA, the CIA, and the FBI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" lang=\"en-GB\">The vast program reported on by\u00a0<i>USA Today<\/i>\u00a0shares some of the same hallmarks of Project Crisscross: it began in the early 1990s, was ostensibly aimed at gathering intelligence about drug trafficking, and targeted countries worldwide, with focus on Central and South America.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DEA GLOBAL SURVEILLANCE DRAGNET EXPOSED; ACCESS TO DATA LIKELY CONTINUES Secret mass surveillance conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration is falling under renewed scrutiny after fresh revelations about the broad scope of the agency\u2019s electronic spying.
