In Order To Beat \u2018Em, You Have to Know Their Game \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

In order to beat Internet trolls, you have to know their strategies.<\/p>\n

Below are 17 common games played by trolls to disrupt our power to learn, inform, and organize on the web \u2026<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0Threaten those who speak out<\/a>, to try to intimidate them and their readers into silence.<\/p>\n

2. Misquote the Bible to pretend that\u00a0God commands us to be obedient slaves to authority<\/a>\u00a0\u2026 even if the powers-that-be are\u00a0downright tyrants<\/a>.<\/p>\n

3. Start a\u00a0partisan divide-and-conquer<\/a>\u00a0fight or otherwise\u00a0push emotional buttons<\/a>\u00a0to sow discord and ensure that cooperation is thwarted. Get people fighting against each other instead of the 3corrupt powers-that-be<\/a>. Use baseless caricatures to\u00a0rile everyone up<\/a>. For example, start a religious war whenever possible using stereotypes like \u201call Jews are selfish\u201d, \u201call Christians are crazy\u201d or \u201call Muslims are terrorists\u201d. Accuse the author of being a gay, pro-abortion limp-wristed wimp or being a fundamentalist pro-war hick when the discussion has nothing to do with abortion, sexuality, religion, war or region. Appeal to people\u2019s basest prejudices and biases. And (as explained by H. Michael Sweeney\u2019s\u00a025 Rules of Disinformation<\/a>) push the author into a defensive posture:<\/p>\n

Sidetrack opponents with name calling and ridicule \u2026 Associate opponents with unpopular titles such as \u201ckooks\u201d, \u201cright-wing\u201d, \u201cliberal\u201d, \u201cleft-wing\u201d, \u201cterrorists\u201d, \u201cconspiracy buffs\u201d, \u201cradicals\u201d, \u201cmilitia\u201d, \u201cracists\u201d, \u201creligious fanatics\u201d, \u201csexual deviates\u201d, and so forth. This makes others shrink from support out of fear of gaining the same label, and you avoid dealing with issues.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

(The person trying to smear reputation may not be a random knucklehead \u2026 he may, in fact, be\u00a0a government agent<\/a>, or\u00a0a member of the group<\/a>\u00a0he\u2019s smearing.)<\/p>\n
