{"id":7084,"date":"2015-04-04T07:04:53","date_gmt":"2015-04-04T12:04:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7084"},"modified":"2015-04-04T07:04:53","modified_gmt":"2015-04-04T12:04:53","slug":"its-a-damn-good-deal-that-will-change-history-unless-the-gop-war-party-sabotages-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=7084","title":{"rendered":"Its A Damn Good Deal That Will Change History\u2014\u2013Unless The GOP War Party Sabotages It"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/davidstockmanscontracorner.com\/its-a-damn-good-deal-that-will-change-history-unless-the-gop-war-party-sabotages-it\/\" target=\"_blank\">Its A Damn Good Deal That Will Change History\u2014\u2013Unless The GOP War Party Sabotages It<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2015\/04\/02\/us-iran-nuclear-obama-statement-idUSKBN0MT26L20150402\" target=\"_blank\">announcement<\/a>\u00a0of a \u201cframework\u201d for an agreement with Iran to limit its nuclear research and development had all the drama of a thriller \u2013 the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/julian-borger-global-security-blog\/2015\/apr\/02\/iran-nuclear-talks-negotiations-lausanne\" target=\"_blank\">extended negotiations<\/a>, dragging out over several days and deadlines, the anticipation, the furor surrounding the process, and of course the naysayers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/netanyahu\/status\/583219825884864512\">carping from the sidelines<\/a>, all focused the attention of the world like a laser.<\/p>\n<p>President Obama did a masterful job in presenting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/docs\/parametersforajointcomprehenisveplanofaction.pdf\">the basic parameters<\/a>\u00a0of the deal in his speech: unlike his critics, he sounded like a true statesman, one who is looking to history, and not the next election or the next day\u2019s headlines.<\/p>\n<p>He stated clearly what are the alternatives to the peaceful resolution of this brewing conflict: war, or walking away from the negotiations \u2013 imposing heavier sanctions, blinding ourselves to what is going on in Iran, and following a course that eventually leads us back down the road to war. And he made a very important point, one that is not often\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.blagnet.net\/2008\/05\/23\/ron-paul-and-obama-on-ussr-iran\/\" target=\"_blank\">brought up<\/a>\u00a0these days: we have been here before.<\/p>\n<p>During the cold war we faced the Soviet Union, a far more dangerous adversary. Instead of launching World War III, we negotiated with them \u2013 an enemy that had vowed to destroy us, and, unlike Iran, actually had the means to do so \u2013 and thus avoided a global conflagration. Citing\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ourdocuments.gov\/doc.php?doc=91&amp;page=transcript\" target=\"_blank\">John F.
