As\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sputniknews.com\/world\/20150330\/1020213157.html\">Sputnik reports<\/a>, India has entered into a contract with a Ukrainian state-owned company to refurbish and upgrade its fleet of military transport planes. Now it has turned out that the company has somehow managed to \u201close\u201d five of them. Part of the fleet was to be refurbished in India, but that has recently stopped, because the Ukrainian engineers went back home and the required spare parts failed to turn up.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>\u201cIndia says five of\u00a0its 40 AN-32 military transport aircrafts have gone missing \u201cwithout a trace\u201d while the planes underwent upgrades in\u00a0Ukraine.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThese five aircraft are almost lost as\u00a0it is difficult to\u00a0trace them and diplomatic efforts to\u00a0find their whereabouts have failed,\u201d the website Defense News quotes an Indian Air Force official as\u00a0saying.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>In 2009, India signed a contract with\u00a0Ukraine\u2019s state-owned arms trading agency, Ukrspetsexport Corp., to\u00a0upgrade its 104 AN-32 transport aircraft at\u00a0a cost of\u00a0US $400 million, as\u00a0the fleet had reached its life expectancy<\/em><\/strong>. The upgrade program started in\u00a02011 and was set to\u00a0run through\u00a02017.<\/p>\n<p>Under the deal, the modernization of\u00a040 warplanes should have been completed in\u00a0Ukraine at\u00a0Kiev-based Antonov State Co. facilities, while the 64 others were set to\u00a0be upgraded in\u00a0India at\u00a0the Air Force\u2019s Kanpur-based base, under\u00a0a technology transfer from\u00a0Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>[\u2026]<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>However out\u00a0of 40 warplanes sent to\u00a0Kiev, only 35 made their way back home.
