The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2012\/05\/09\/rcmp_spied_on_bc_natives_protesting_pipeline_plan_documents_show.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Toronto Star<\/em><\/a>\u00a0that year obtained documents showing that federal police had monitored private meetings held between her coalition and local environmental groups.<\/p>\n<p>Now she just laughs when asked whether she\u2019s comforted by assurances from government officials that new surveillance and policing powers outlined under a proposed Canadian Anti-Terror Law\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/bill-c-51-sister-of-slain-soldier-patrice-vincent-testifies-as-committee-review-resumes-1.3005604\">wouldn\u2019t<\/a>\u00a0be aimed at peaceful protesters.<\/p>\n<p>The passage of the terrorism bill would represent a new \u201copen season on First Nations who are speaking out,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Across Canada, police surveillance and intervention have\u00a0long been a reality for groups working to stop development of fossil fuel extraction, including pipeline construction and fracking.
