Today\u2019s Contemplation: Collapse Cometh CCL\u2013Smoke Without Borders: Politicians Without Conscience<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

Had some \u201cquality\u201d indoor time the past few days as wildfire smoke made it dangerous to be outside \u2014 or in my gardens \u2014 here north of Toronto. And rather than get to the myriad of chores I could have been doing in the house, I\u2019ve spent some time reflecting on the situation through my particular interpretive lens \u2014 as I also prepare other Contemplations along the lines I\u2019ve been writing for the past month or more, so this one is a slight detour from those.<\/p>\n

The current political discourse in the United States regarding Canadian wildfire smoke represents a troubling confluence of diplomatic hubris, scientific ignorance, and a fundamental misunderstanding of ecological scale. As American politicians push for sanctions and tariffs against Canada for failing to \u201chalt\u201d fires burning across vast, remote landscapes, they expose a profound failure to grasp the nature of the crisis, its historical context, and the shared responsibility that transcends national borders.<\/p>\n

Yet beneath this ignorance lies something far more cynical: the deliberate weaponisation of a planetary disaster for domestic political gain \u2014 a tactic that, while not new, has now been escalated to a breathtakingly dangerous scale. But perhaps the most damning indictment of this spectacle is not its cynicism, but its function as a magnificent distraction \u2014 a sleight-of-hand that diverts public attention from the fundamental predicament that no tariff or sanction can possibly address: ecological overshoot, and the relentless pursuit of economic growth that serves a ruling elite whose consumption dwarfs that of the rest of humanity.<\/p>\n

To begin with, we must acknowledge an uncomfortable geological truth: climate change is not a novel invention of the industrial age. Since the planet coalesced some 4.5 billion years ago, Earth\u2019s climate has been in perpetual flux \u2014 driven by orbital wobbles, volcanic outgassing, solar variability, and shifts in ocean currents. Long before a single smokestack or SUV, our world endured periodic swings into hotter, drier regimes that parched continents, transformed forests into savannas, and ignited infernos across primordial landscapes. The fossil record is littered with evidence of megadroughts and fire-adapted ecosystems that thrived and collapsed long before humans sharpened their first tools. In this sense, fire is not an aberration of Nature but one of its oldest recurring characters.<\/p>\n

However \u2014 and this is the critical nuance \u2014 to invoke ancient climatic cycles as a defense against present concern is a logical sleight-of-hand. The issue is not whether climate changes, but the rate and scale of the current shift. While the planet has indeed experienced warmer and drier periods, these transitions typically unfolded over centuries or millennia, granting ecosystems and species generational time to adapt. What distinguishes our era is the velocity of warming, accelerated by the exponential extraction and burning of hydrocarbons, and the relentless expansion of human industry and impact over the past two centuries. We have overloaded the atmosphere \u2014 one of Earth\u2019s most sensitive planetary sinks \u2014 with greenhouse gases at a pace that outruns any natural precedent since the\u00a0Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum<\/a>, 56 million years ago. The result is not climate change per se, but climate destabilization \u2014 a supercharging of natural variability that turns seasonal dry spells into record-breaking heatwaves and ordinary lightning strikes into conflagrations of unprecedented fury.<\/p>\n

Yet even this framing, urgent as it is, risks missing the deeper structural rot. The fires, the smoke, the sanctions debate \u2014 all of it unfolds within a broader civilisational logic that treats the biosphere as a limitless subsidy for perpetual growth. This is the predicament of ecological overshoot: humanity now consumes resources at a rate equivalent to 1.7 Earths, and our atmospheric sink has long since been overwhelmed. Nor is carbon dioxide the only symptom \u2014 biodiversity loss, soil degradation, freshwater depletion, and the collapse of oceanic food webs are parallel indicators of the same systemic malady, each reinforcing the others in a cascade of interconnected crises.<\/p>\n

But overshoot is not an equal-opportunity disaster. The ruling elite of the American Empire \u2014 a narrow stratum of corporate executives, hydrocarbon-fuel magnates, resource conglomerates, and political benefactors \u2014 extracts the lion\u2019s share of benefits from this growth-at-all-costs model, while externalising the costs onto the global South, future generations, and, increasingly, Canada\u2019s boreal forests.<\/p>\n

To focus on carbon emissions for the moment \u2014 knowing full well that such carbon tunnel vision misses the larger picture \u2014 the average American\u2019s carbon footprint is nearly double that of a European, and more than ten times that of the average Indian or Nigerian. But even that average conceals staggering inequality: the wealthiest 1% of Americans emit more carbon than the entire bottom 60% combined. These are the architects and primary beneficiaries of a system that prizes quarterly returns over planetary boundaries, and they are now grandstanding about Canadian forestry practices as if the problem were rakes and bulldozers rather than boardroom decisions and campaign contributions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This brings us to the deeply flawed debate over \u201cforest management\u201d \u2014 a term that has been weaponised by politicians who speak of thinning and prescribed burns as panaceas, often with the simplistic refrain that we should simply \u201cmanage our forests bigly\u201d. The irony is that in Canada\u2019s boreal ecosystem, aggressive management can actually exacerbate the very conflagrations it purports to prevent. Ecological science has long understood that fire is a natural regenerative force in boreal forests; many tree species, including jack pine and black spruce, possess serotinous cones that require the heat of fire to release their seeds. Suppressing fires in these landscapes allows fuel loads \u2014 deadfall, understory brush, and dense regeneration \u2014 to accumulate over decades. When fire inevitably returns, fueled by this unnatural build-up and intensified by climate-driven drought, it burns with a ferocity that dwarfs what would have occurred under a natural cycle of frequent, low-intensity burns. This is the \u201cfire suppression paradox\u201d: the more we fight small fires, the larger the eventual infernos become.<\/p>\n

In the American West, where aggressive suppression has been policy for a century, we have seen this dynamic play out catastrophically \u2014 yet the same politicians now demand that Canada repeat those errors on a continental scale. Prescribed burns, the favoured solution of management advocates, are logistically impossible across the vast, roadless expanses of the north; even if they were attempted, the smoke from such burns would provoke the same transboundary complaints that sparked this entire debacle. Thinning operations, meanwhile, require ground access and industrial infrastructure that simply do not exist in regions accessible only by floatplane. What works in a managed pine plantation in Georgia has no bearing on a remote watershed in northern Manitoba where the nearest road is 300 kilometers away. To demand \u201cbetter management\u201d of these ancient forests is to demand that Canada impose a suburban landscaping ethic upon a wilderness the size of a continent \u2014 an exercise in ecological arrogance that would cost many billions and deliver, at best, marginal returns, while at worst creating the exact conditions for the catastrophic crown fires that now darken American skies.<\/p>\n

The logistical reality of these fires renders any comparison to U.S. wildfire management not just unfair but absurd. Canada\u2019s boreal forest \u2014 the largest intact forest ecosystem on Earth \u2014 stretches across 1.2 billion acres, an expanse so vast that it represents fully one-third of the world\u2019s remaining primary forests. Unlike the fire-prone chaparral and pine forests of California or the intermountain West, where a network of interstate highways, forest service roads, and rural fire departments provides relatively rapid ground access, the Canadian north is a landscape of muskeg, permafrost, and endless treeline interrupted only by scattered fly-in communities.<\/p>\n

The overwhelming majority of these fires are accessible only by fixed-wing aircraft or helicopter \u2014 an operational reality that transforms every firefighting sortie into a costly logistical expedition. A single water bomber sortie can cost tens of thousands of dollars; establishing a remote fire camp with crew, pumps, and hoses requires airlifting tonnes of equipment across hundreds of kilometers of unbroken wilderness.<\/p>\n

By contrast, the vast majority of U.S. fires that threaten structures occur within a few kilometers of road infrastructure, allowing for ground-based engine crews and bulldozers to carve firebreaks with relative efficiency. This is not a matter of Canadian negligence; it is a matter of geography. The entire state of California \u2014 infamous for its devastating fires \u2014 could fit into the province of Ontario eleven times over, and Ontario has fewer than 3,000 kilometers of paved roads in its northern half. To demand that Canada suppress fires across an area larger than Western Europe with the same efficacy as the U.S. manages its more accessible terrain is to demand that a canoe outperform a speedboat on the open ocean. The expense is staggering: Canada spends upwards of C$1 billion annually on wildfire suppression in recent peak seasons, yet this still covers only a fraction of the active blazes, because the calculus of boreal fire management is not extinguishment but containment \u2014 prioritizing populated areas and letting the remote fires burn until rain or snow intervenes.<\/p>\n

This distinction, however, is inconvenient for those whose primary interest is not environmental stewardship but electoral calculus. The spectacle of American politicians decrying Canadian \u201cnegligence\u201d while wielding threats of sanctions is merely the latest entry in a long and sordid tradition of crisis exploitation. From the \u201cRed Scare\u201d to the War on Terror, leaders have long understood that an external threat \u2014 real or manufactured \u2014 can unify a base, distract from domestic failures, and justify punitive action.<\/p>\n

But what we are witnessing now represents a perverse escalation: the transformation of a planetary phenomenon \u2014 smoke that obeys jet streams, not jurisdictions \u2014 into a bilateral grievance. This is not statesmanship; it is atmospheric theater, staged for cameras while the actual emergency rages across millions of hectares. And its most insidious effect is to foreclose any serious conversation about the consumption patterns, trade structures, and military-industrial priorities that underpin American prosperity at the expense of the planet\u2019s remaining ecological buffers.<\/p>\n

The hubris deepens when we consider the sheer absurdity of the proposed remedy. Sanctions and increased tariffs against Canada for fires that are driven by weather patterns, many of which originate in the Pacific and traverse the entire continent, presume that Ottawa possesses some lever to switch off drought or redirect cyclonic winds. It is akin to fining a neighbor for rainclouds passing over your lawn. Yet this logical bankruptcy does not deter the architects of this narrative, because their goal is not policy coherence but political polarisation. By framing Canada as a negligent perpetrator and the U.S. as a blameless victim, they offer their constituents a comforting fiction: that the problem is foreign mismanagement, not a global system of extraction and emission in which the United States remains the leading historical contributor and the primary beneficiary of the very hydrocarbon-fuel regime and economic growth that heats the planet.<\/p>\n

This self-serving amnesia is particularly glaring given the U.S.\u2019s own fire record. As of mid-July 2026, America is experiencing an above-average fire year, with 3.7 million acres burned. American fires have drifted north into Canada in previous seasons and are doing so currently from conflagrations in Washington state and Oregon, yet no Canadian legislator threatened sanctions or tariffs over it. Furthermore, the current U.S. administration\u2019s rollback of climate protections and dismissal of climate science as a \u201ccon job\u201d directly contribute to the very conditions that intensify fire seasons on both sides of the border. Senator Markey\u2019s call for coordinated action is therefore more apt than ever: \u201cLike the climate crisis, the wildfire crisis is a shared crisis. It does not respect national boundaries\u201d.<\/p>\n

Finally, the push for sanctions stands in grotesque opposition to decades of binational cooperation. U.S. Ambassador Pete Hoekstra has commended the \u201coutstanding cooperation\u201d between the two countries in sharing fire intelligence. Ontario Minister Mike Harris Jr. noted that two fires from Minnesota have crossed into Canada and merged with Ontario blazes, underscoring that fire knows no passport. Premier Doug Ford\u2019s retort to Republican lawmakers was a plain-spoken plea: \u201cMaybe what you should do rather than complain is send support, send help, because we have done the exact same thing for our American friends\u201d.<\/p>\n

Yet I would be disingenuous to wrap a patriotic cloak around this issue, as if Canada stood as a virtuous foil to American recklessness. I have little doubt that Canadian politicians are similarly leveraging the situation to their own advantage \u2014 striking defiant postures against U.S. threats to appease a voter base incensed by the current president\u2019s musings about annexation, while quietly calculating how they might profit from the moment. The spectacle of parliamentary grandstanding, the performative outrage, the solemn declarations of Canadian sovereignty \u2014 all of it serves the same electoral calculus that drives their American counterparts.<\/p>\n

But there is a more insidious dimension to this Canadian opportunism. The very threats emanating from Washington \u2014 whether over wildfire smoke, trade imbalances, or the president\u2019s rhetorical flirtations with annexation \u2014 are being cynically repurposed by Ottawa as justification for a renewed push toward massive, growth-oriented infrastructure and resource extraction projects. Pipelines, mining expansions, liquefied natural gas terminals, and clear-cut logging approvals are being fast-tracked under the banner of \u201ceconomic sovereignty\u201d and \u201c\u201dnational security\u201d, as if digging faster and burning more were acts of patriotic defiance rather than ecological suicide. The message, implicit but unmistakable, is that we must double down on the very extractive economy that warms the planet, because American bullying leaves us no choice. This is convenient calculus: external threat provides political cover for internal plunder. And on the underlying predicament \u2014 ecological overshoot, the impossibility of endless growth, the structural inequities that concentrate wealth and externalise ruin \u2014 they remain conspicuously, conveniently silent. To speak truth to that particular power would be to threaten their own privileges, their own campaign coffers, their own access to the very extraction-driven economy that fills provincial and federal treasuries. The smoke does not discriminate between parties, and neither does the cynicism.<\/p>\n

And yet, as I write these words, I am acutely aware that the very act of publishing this critique carries personal risk \u2014 a growing reality that speaks to the chilling direction of contemporary American governance. In recent months, we have witnessed troubling developments whereby legitimate dissent, policy criticism, and even academic analysis are increasingly framed through the lens of national security, with rhetoric that equates unflattering narratives to \u201cdomestic terrorism:. The Department of Homeland Security has expanded its purview to monitor \u201cmisinformation\u201d and \u201cdisinformation\u201d that allegedly undermines public trust, while certain legislators have proposed legislation that would empower executive agencies to designate advocacy groups \u2014 and by extension, individual voices \u2014 as threats to critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n

This is not hyperbole; it is the slow normalisation of thought-policing dressed in the garb of emergency powers. For a Canadian citizen like myself, with close family residing in the United States, the stakes are not abstract. The border, once a porous line of convenience, has become a potential chokepoint. I must weigh every published sentence against the possibility that a customs officer, armed with algorithms that flag \u201canti-American\u201d sentiment, might deem my writings sufficient grounds for denial of entry \u2014 or worse, referral to secondary screening that could unravel my ability to see family. This is the asymmetrical warfare of the modern surveillance state: it does not need to imprison you to silence you; it merely needs to make you hesitate. And hesitate I do, even as I type. But to remain silent would be to concede that the smoke we breathe is less dangerous than the fear we are being taught to swallow.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, to sanction Canada over this environmental crisis is not leadership but scapegoating \u2014 a willful confusion between natural climatic rhythms and human-accelerated destabilisation, deliberately stoked for domestic applause. Yes, the planet has burned before, and yes, it will burn again. But the fires of 2026 are not the fires of the Miocene; they are the fires of a world whose atmospheric sink has been overloaded by two centuries of heedless extraction and economic growth, and whose political class now profits twice \u2014 first from the extraction and industry, and then from the performative outrage over its consequences.<\/p>\n

The smoke drifting across the border is a mirror, not a menace. It reflects a shared atmosphere, a shared history, and a shared future \u2014 but it also reflects a profound inequality of cause and effect, a logistical gulf that no amount of Canadian investment can bridge, a management paradox that turns aggressive intervention into a self-defeating prophecy, and a deepening authoritarian reflex that punishes those who dare to point it out. To leverage that smoke for political points is not merely cynical; it is to set fire to the very principle of international cooperation, in the vain hope that the flames will not leap back across the line. They always do.<\/p>\n

But more tragically, it is to squander our last chance to confront the actual predicament: that endless growth on a finite planet is a mathematical impossibility, and that the elites who profit most from this impossibility \u2014 on both sides of the border \u2014 are now busy pointing fingers at their neighbors, hoping we will not notice that they are the ones holding the match, even as the ash falls on all of us equally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Only time will tell how this all unfolds but there\u2019s nothing wrong with preparing for the worst by \u2018collapsing now to avoid the rush\u2019 and pursuing self-sufficiency. By this I mean removing as many dependencies on the Matrix as is possible and making do, locally. And if one can do this without negative impacts upon our fragile ecosystems or do so while creating more resilient ecosystems, all the better.<\/p>\n

Building community (maybe even just household) resilience to as high a level as possible seems prudent given the uncertainties of an unpredictable future. There\u2019s no guarantee it will ensure \u2018recovery\u2019 after a significant societal stressor\/shock but it should increase the probability of it and that, perhaps, is all we can \u2018hope\u2019 for from its pursuit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
