{"id":6908,"date":"2015-03-28T07:32:47","date_gmt":"2015-03-28T12:32:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=6908"},"modified":"2015-03-28T07:32:47","modified_gmt":"2015-03-28T12:32:47","slug":"calls-for-immediate-shutdown-of-illegal-california-injection-wells-as-regulators-host-aquifer-exemption-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=6908","title":{"rendered":"Calls For Immediate Shutdown Of Illegal California Injection Wells As Regulators Host &#8216;Aquifer Exemption Workshop&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/03\/25\/calls-emergency-shutdowns-regulators-host-aquifer-exemption-workshop-dubbed-toxic-dumping-dummies\" target=\"_blank\">Calls For Immediate Shutdown Of Illegal California Injection Wells As Regulators Host &#8216;Aquifer Exemption Workshop&#8217;<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">While California legislators are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-lawmakers-urge-shutdown-20150320-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">calling for immediate closure<\/a>\u00a0of the thousands of injection wells illegally dumping oil industry wastewater and enhanced oil recovery fluids into protected groundwater aquifers, regulators with the state\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.conservation.ca.gov\/dog\/Pages\/Index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Division of Oil, Gas and Geothermal Resources<\/a>\u00a0(<span class=\"caps\">DOGGR<\/span>) were holding an \u201cAquifer Exemption Workshop\u201d in Long Beach on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Just 23 out of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/sites\/beta.desmogblog.com\/files\/Enclosure%20B%20-%20Breakdown%20of%20Potential%20Wells%20Injecting%20into%20NonExempt%20Zones%202-5-15.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">2,500 wells\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">DOGGR<\/span>\u00a0officials have acknowledged<\/a>\u00a0the agency improperly permitted to operate in aquifers that contain potentially drinkable water have so far been closed down \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2014\/07\/21\/california-orders-emergency-shutdown-fracking-wastewater-injection-sites-over-fears-contaminated-aquifers\" target=\"_blank\">11 were closed down<\/a>last July and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/2015\/03\/05\/more-oil-industry-wastewater-injection-wells-shut-down-over-groundwater-contamination\" target=\"_blank\">12 more were shut down<\/a>\u00a0earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>Given the urgency of the situation, it certainly does not look good that\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">DOGGR<\/span>\u00a0made time to hold a workshop to outline \u201cthe data requirements and process for requesting an aquifer exemption under the Safe Drinking Water Act,\u201d when it has given itself a two-year deadline to investigate the thousands more wells illegally operating in groundwater aquifers that should have been protected under the federal Safe Drinking Water Act all along.<\/p>\n<p>Last Friday, state legislators sent Governor Jerry Brown\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biologicaldiversity.org\/programs\/public_lands\/energy\/dirty_energy_development\/oil_and_gas\/pdfs\/Pavley_sign_on_ltr_to_Gov_Injec.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a letter<\/a>\u00a0calling for the immediate closure of the wells, writing that \u201cthe decision to allow thousands of injection wells to continue pumping potentially hazardous fluids into protected aquifers is reckless.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Calls For Immediate Shutdown Of Illegal California Injection Wells As Regulators Host &#8216;Aquifer Exemption Workshop&#8217;
