{"id":6902,"date":"2015-03-28T07:24:41","date_gmt":"2015-03-28T12:24:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=6902"},"modified":"2015-03-28T07:24:41","modified_gmt":"2015-03-28T12:24:41","slug":"leave-the-houthis-alone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=6902","title":{"rendered":"Leave the Houthis Alone!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"entry-title\"><a href=\"http:\/\/davidstockmanscontracorner.com\/leave-the-houthis-alone\/\" target=\"_blank\">Leave the Houthis Alone!<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/2015\/03\/24\/uk-yemen-security-usa-saudi-exclusive-idUKKBN0MK2RZ20150324\" target=\"_blank\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>\u2018s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/checkpoint\/wp\/2015\/03\/26\/how-u-s-weapons-will-play-a-large-role-in-saudi-arabias-war-in-yemen\/\" target=\"_blank\">US-backed<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thetwo-way\/2015\/03\/25\/395294977\/yemens-president-flees-palace-as-rebels-continue-advance\" target=\"_blank\">aggression<\/a>\u00a0against the sovereignty of Yemen is a textbook example of how local conflicts are internationalized \u2013 and become tripwires for regional wars and even global conflagrations.<\/p>\n<p>Like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/original.antiwar.com\/justin\/2011\/03\/13\/libya-does-not-exist\/\" target=\"_blank\">Libya<\/a>, Yemen is yet another Middle Eastern country that doesn\u2019t really exist: it is actually at least two separate countries,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wikileaks.org\/plusd\/cables\/07SANAA226_a.html\">perhaps three<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the southern provinces, which are primarily Sunni, the northern tribes, who adhere mostly to they Zaydi form of Shi\u2019ite Islam, and the area around Sa\u2019na, the capital, one of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.britannica.com\/EBchecked\/topic\/521694\/Sanaa\" target=\"_blank\">oldest<\/a>\u00a0continuously inhabited cities on earth, where all Yemen\u2019s clashing cultural, political, and religious factions meet.<\/p>\n<p>The north\/south division dates back to the nineteenth century British colonization, when, in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Aden-Under-British-Rule-1839-67\/dp\/0903983141\/antiwarbookstore\" target=\"_blank\">1839<\/a>, the British seized the port city of Aden and administered it as a subset of the Indian Viceroyalty. It became a major trading center after the opening of the Suez canal, and the Brits pushed outward, extending their influence throughout what had been a land perpetually divided between the Ottoman Empire and local imams, including the distinctive Zaydis in the north. In 1911, the Zaydis rose up against the British and their local collaborators, abolished the north\/south division negotiated by the British Foreign Office, and established the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/memim.com\/mutawakkilite-kingdom-of-yemen.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mutawakkilite Kingdom<\/a>\u00a0of Yemen under Imam Yahya.
