INQUIRY LAUNCHED INTO NEW ZEALAND MASS SURVEILLANCE<\/a><\/h3>\n

New Zealand\u2019s spy agency watchdog is launching an investigation into the scope of the country\u2019s secret surveillance operations following a series of reports from\u00a0The Intercept<\/em>\u00a0and its partners.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Cheryl Gwyn, New Zealand\u2019s inspector-general of intelligence and security, announced that she would be opening an inquiry after receiving complaints about spying being conducted in the South Pacific by eavesdropping agency Government Communications Security Bureau, or GCSB.<\/p>\n

In a\u00a0press release<\/a>, Gwyn\u2019s office said: \u201cThe complaints follow recent public allegations about GCSB activities. The complaints, and these public allegations, raise wider questions regarding the collection, retention and sharing of communications data.\u201d<\/p>\n

This month,\u00a0The Intercept<\/em>\u00a0has shined a light on the GCSB\u2019s surveillance with investigative reports produced in partnership with the\u00a0New Zealand Herald<\/em>,\u00a0Herald on Sunday<\/em>, and\u00a0Sunday-Star-Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The reports, based on information from National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden and other sources, have\u00a0revealed<\/a>\u00a0how the GCSB has been intercepting communications in bulk across a variety of neighboring South Pacific islands, raising\u00a0concerns<\/a>\u00a0that New Zealand citizens\u2019 emails and phone calls are being swept up in the dragnet.<\/p>\n

The reports have also shown how the GCSB is\u00a0funneling data into the NSA\u2019s XKEYSCORE<\/a>\u00a0internet surveillance system from a surveillance base in the Waihopai Valley and is\u00a0spying on about 20 countries<\/a>\u00a0across the world, predominantly in the Asia-Pacific region, including major trading partners such as Japan, Vietnam and China. The most recent stories haverevealed<\/a>\u00a0that GCSB used XKEYSCORE to spy on emails about candidates vying to be the director general of the World Trade Organization and\u00a0target<\/a>top government officials and an anti-corruption campaigner in the Solomon Islands.<\/p>\n

Following the disclosures, several of New Zealand\u2019s opposition political leaders have\u00a0criticized<\/a>\u00a0the surveillance and\u00a0filed<\/a>\u00a0complaints<\/a>\u00a0with Gwyn, the inspector-general of intelligence and security.<\/p>\n
