{"id":68534,"date":"2024-06-09T17:19:34","date_gmt":"2024-06-09T22:19:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=68534"},"modified":"2024-06-09T17:20:24","modified_gmt":"2024-06-09T22:20:24","slug":"putin-warns-west-over-ukraine-armaments-nuclear-arsenal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=68534","title":{"rendered":"Putin warns West over Ukraine armaments, nuclear arsenal"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"article-header\">\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/6\/5\/putin-warns-west-over-ukraine-armaments-nuclear-arsenal-in-news-conference\">Putin warns West over Ukraine armaments, nuclear arsenal<\/a><\/h3>\n<p class=\"article__subhead\"><strong><em>Russian president reiterates in news conference that attacking NATO countries is a \u2018crazy\u2019 idea but warns against Ukraine interference.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"wysiwyg wysiwyg--all-content css-ibbk12\" aria-live=\"polite\" aria-atomic=\"true\">\n<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that his country would not rule out using nuclear weapons if its sovereignty or territory were threatened.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Putin met in person with senior editors from international news agencies for the first time since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>He answered questions ranging from the threat of nuclear war to possible repercussions for countries that support Ukraine\u2019s efforts to launch attacks within Russian territory.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the prospect of using Russia\u2019s nuclear arsenal, the president said it was not out of the question.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor some reason, the West believes that Russia will never use it,\u201d Putin responded, pointing towards the country\u2019s 2020 nuclear doctrine.<\/p>\n<p>It authorises the Russian government to consider nuclear options if a weapon of mass destruction is used against the country or if \u201cthe very existence of the state is put under threat\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a nuclear doctrine. Look what it says. If someone\u2019s actions threaten our sovereignty and territorial integrity, we consider it possible for us to use all means at our disposal. This should not be taken lightly, superficially.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"attack-on-nato-rubbish\"><strong>Attack on NATO \u2018rubbish\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Putin also took the opportunity once again to brush aside fears that Russia could attack countries in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should not make Russia out to be the enemy.
