{"id":6848,"date":"2015-03-26T06:09:58","date_gmt":"2015-03-26T11:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=6848"},"modified":"2015-03-26T06:09:58","modified_gmt":"2015-03-26T11:09:58","slug":"greater-public-scrutiny-needed-of-secret-us-eu-trade-negotiations-mps-warn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=6848","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Greater Public Scrutiny&#8217; Needed of Secret US-EU Trade Negotiations, MPs Warn"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/desmog.uk\/2015\/03\/26\/secret-us-eu-ttip-negotiations-are-polarising-debate-mps-warn\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;Greater Public Scrutiny&#8217; Needed of Secret US-EU Trade Negotiations, MPs Warn<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The debate over the controversial\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/trade\/policy\/in-focus\/ttip\/\" target=\"_blank\">Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership<\/a>\u00a0(<span class=\"caps\">TTIP<\/span>) continues to suffer from a lack of transparency,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.publications.parliament.uk\/pa\/cm201415\/cmselect\/cmbis\/804\/804.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">warns a report<\/a>by the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">UK<\/span>\u00a0Business, Innovation and Skills (<span class=\"caps\">BIS<\/span>)\u00a0Committee.<\/p>\n<p>The secretive nature of the negotiations between the European Union and the United States on this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg22429932.600-ttip-how-the-worlds-largest-trade-deal-affects-you.html#.VRKy6-E_bAQ\" target=\"_blank\">major free trade deal<\/a>\u00a0has resulted in an \u201coversimplification and misrepresentation of arguments on both sides\u201d the Committee\u00a0concludes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/biographies\/commons\/mr-adrian-bailey\/320\" target=\"_blank\">Adrian Bailey<\/a>, Chair of the\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">BIS<\/span>\u00a0Committee said: \u201cMore detail needs to be made available to allow greater public scrutiny of this extensive trade\u00a0agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report argues that \u201cEveryone involved in the debate on\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">TTIP<\/span>\u2014campaigners, lobbyists, the<span class=\"caps\">UK<\/span>\u00a0Government and the European Commission\u2014must ensure that an evidence-based approach is at the heart of any\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">TTIP<\/span>\u00a0debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"dquo\">\u201c<\/span>Unfortunately, in the absence of that detail or undertakings that negotiating texts will be made public, the debate on the trade agreement has become\u00a0polarised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Environmental\u00a0Risks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The high degree of secrecy means it is impossible to monitor or evaluate what issues are being taken into account the report explains.
