class=\"paywall\">Manzanita, with its peeling red bark and delicate pitcher-shaped blossoms, thrives on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/database\/feis\/plants\/shrub\/arcman\/all.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dry, rocky ridges of Northern California<\/a>. The small evergreen tree or shrub is famously drought-tolerant, with some varieties capable of enduring more than\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rootsimple.com\/2015\/12\/the-manzanita-miracle-or-why-you-should-love-native-plants-if-you-live-in-a-dry-climate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.rootsimple.com\/2015\/12\/the-manzanita-miracle-or-why-you-should-love-native-plants-if-you-live-in-a-dry-climate\/\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.rootsimple.com\/2015\/12\/the-manzanita-miracle-or-why-you-should-love-native-plants-if-you-live-in-a-dry-climate\/&quot;}\">200 days between waterings<\/a>. And yet here I was, gently lowering an 18-inch variety named for botanist\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu\/plants\/arctostaphylos-densiflora-howard-mcminn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu\/plants\/arctostaphylos-densiflora-howard-mcminn\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/landscapeplants.oregonstate.edu\/plants\/arctostaphylos-densiflora-howard-mcminn&quot;}\">Howard McMinn<\/a>\u00a0into the damp soil of Tacoma, a city in Washington known for its towering Douglas firs, big-leaf maples, and an average of\u00a0<a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/wrcc.dri.edu\/cgi-bin\/cliMAIN.pl?wa8278\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/wrcc.dri.edu\/cgi-bin\/cliMAIN.pl?wa8278\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/wrcc.dri.edu\/cgi-bin\/cliMAIN.pl?wa8278&quot;}\">152 rainy days per year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It\u2019s not that I\u2019m a thoughtless gardener. Some studies suggest that the Seattle area\u2019s climate will more closely\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0217592#sec010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resemble Northern California\u2019s by 2050<\/a>, so I\u2019m planting that region\u2019s trees, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Climate change is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2021-12\/30339_epa_report_climate_change_and_seasonality_v12_release_508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scrambling the seasons<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/science-trees-seattle-washington-conifers-7b4428ccddcb05904f478d97b6c4a570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wreaking havoc on trees<\/a>. Some temperate and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4602113\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-altitude regions<\/a>\u00a0will grow more humid, which can lead to lethal rot.
