(Marco Ugarte\/The Associated Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"story\">\n<p>The extreme heat smothering much of Mexico has\u00a0already killed dozens of people, but the hottest temperatures are yet to come, officials say.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the next 10 to 15 days, the country will experience the highest temperatures ever recorded,&#8221; researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dgcs.unam.mx\/boletin\/bdboletin\/2024_388.html\">statement\u00a0<\/a>earlier this week. They called the heat wave &#8220;unprecedented.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the Weather Channel,\u00a0by early next week, temperatures in\u00a0Veracruz are expected to soar to 37 C,\u00a0Tabasco will be 40 C\u00a0and Mexicali will reach temperatures of 40.5 C.<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures in the capital, Mexico City,\u00a0could reach a record 35 C\u00a0in the next two weeks, said Jorge Zavala, director of UNAM&#8217;s Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Change.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the metropolitan area&#8217;s 21 million residents \u2014 accustomed to more temperate weather \u2014 lack air conditioning.
