If you have 14 minutes to spare, jump right in:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vFmjgbdNNgw?si=xz3Dqpu5sr1BZAOy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Opening the case for the left was Rachel Haddad, Secretary of the Oxford Union. She argued that populist leaders like Donald Trump and Nigel Farage pose a threat to democracy, and are not a &#8220;new generation of geniuses&#8221; who can find simple solutions to longstanding, complex problems.<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi closed the debate for the proposition, defining populism as an &#8220;ethno-nationalist populism, generated by an ethnic negativity to immigrants, people who are different from them and the rest&#8221; (so, &#8216;they&#8217;re racists!&#8217;).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VW8SnMRhExA?si=RXRMNnhBO_j67xlZ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaking against the motion\u00a0<\/strong>were Union committee members Sultan Kokhar (Chair of Consultative Committee) and Oscar Whittle (Director of Research), as well as former Mumford &amp; Sons lead guitarist, Winston Marshall &#8211; now a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLdprXL2fUVn2dYJglqmfdIDQwzftanuEp\">podcaster<\/a>\u00a0for The Spectator<strong>\u00a0&#8211; who got into an exchange with Pelosi during parts of his speech<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marshall started out by saying:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Words have a tendency to change meaning when\u00a0<strong>I was a boy, &#8220;woman&#8221; meant &#8220;someone who didn&#8217;t have a cock.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Populism has become a word used synonymously with &#8220;racists.&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0We&#8217;ve heard &#8220;ethno-nationalist,&#8221; with &#8220;bigot,&#8221; with &#8220;hillbilly,&#8221; &#8220;redneck,&#8221; with &#8220;deplorables.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elites use it to show their contempt for ordinary people.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>He then noted that Barack Obama,\u00a0<\/strong>while still president, tried to frame he and Bernie Sanders as\u00a0<em>actual<\/em>\u00a0populists vs. Donald Trump, who &#8216;doesn&#8217;t care about working people.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>But then, &#8220;If you watch Obama&#8217;s speeches after that point, more and more recently,\u00a0<strong>he uses the word &#8220;populist&#8221; interchangeably with &#8220;strong man,&#8221; with &#8220;authoritarian.&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0The word changes meaning, it becomes a negative, a pejorative, a slur.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Watch: Pelosi Dismantled In Real Time In Masterclass On Populism Two weeks ago, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was thoroughly savaged during a debate at Oxford University over the question of\u00a0whether populism is a &#8220;threat to democracy.&#8221;\u00a0In case you missed it, read on as it&#8217;s making the rounds.
