Drought fuels wildfire concerns as Canada braces for another intense summer<\/a><\/h3>\n
The 2023 wildfire season was historic and deadly in Canada. This summer could be more of the same.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/header>\n

As widespread drought raises expectations for a repeat of last year\u2019s ferocious wildfire season, response teams across Canada are grappling with the rapidly changing face of fire in a warming climate.<\/p>\n

No longer quenched by winter, nor quelled by the relative cool of night, last summer\u2019s wildfires burned an unprecedented 18.5 million hectares of land\u2014more than seven times the historic average.<\/p>\n

Canada<\/a>\u2019s warmest ever\u00a0<\/a>winter<\/a>\u00a0followed, with low to non-existent snowpack in many areas, and ongoing drought raising fears that this summer will see more of Canada\u2019s forests and\u00a0wildland urban interface<\/a>\u00a0go up in flames.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe dry and historically warm winter we just experienced across Canada puts the country in a bad spot heading into wildfire season over the weeks and months ahead,\u201d The Weather Network\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0in March.<\/p>\n

In April, Canada\u2019s Drought Monitor\u00a0found<\/a>\u00a0much of western Canada, swathes of the Northwest Territories, central Ontario, and much of northeastern Quebec and Labrador in moderate to severe drought conditions. Meanwhile, British Columbia and Alberta are experiencing extreme and \u201cexceptional\u201d drought in pockets. B.C.\u2019s scant snowpack after spring snow was at 63% of normal levels in early April, with conditions in some regions far worse,\u00a0reports<\/a>\u00a0CBC News.<\/p>\n

What happens next depends upon how spring progresses.<\/p>\n

While B.C.\u2019s south coast and interior did receive much-needed rain this past weekend and snow at higher elevations, The Weather Network\u00a0predicted<\/a>\u00a0that any precipitation would \u201cfall far short of what we need to meaningfully put a dent in the drought.\u201d<\/p>\n
