So far, our oceans have\u00a0<a class=\"sc-8fed6dee-0 gPEPzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/understanding-climate\/climate-change-ocean-heat-content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soaked up over 90% of the heat<\/a>\u00a0trapped in the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere by rising greenhouse gas emissions. But recently, their\u00a0<a class=\"sc-8fed6dee-0 gPEPzk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20230720-theres-a-heatwave-in-the-sea-and-scientists-are-worried\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\">rate of warming has been dramatic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"sc-b77c8bb-0 daiYje\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-e1853509-0 bmLndb\">Every day since late March 2023, global ocean surface temperatures have set\u00a0<a class=\"sc-8fed6dee-0 gPEPzk\" href=\"https:\/\/climatereanalyzer.org\/clim\/sst_daily\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new records<\/a>\u00a0for the hottest temperature ever recorded on that date. On 47 of those days, temperatures have also surpassed previous highs by the largest margin seen in the satellite era, according to data from the European Union&#8217;s Copernicus Climate Change Service.
