From April 28 onward, a\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">major<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0part of its territory, about the size of the United Kingdom, has been submerged\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-68968987\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">underwater<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The heavy rains soon transformed into violent floods,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/g1.globo.com\/rs\/rio-grande-do-sul\/noticia\/2024\/05\/07\/sobe-para-90-o-numero-de-mortos-apos-enchentes-que-atingem-o-rs.ghtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">impacting<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0over 1.4 million people, with at least\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/noticias.uol.com.br\/cotidiano\/ultimas-noticias\/2024\/05\/08\/boletim-chuvas-rio-grande-do-sul-oito-de-maio.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">100 people confirmed dead<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, according to reports published May 8. Entering its sixth day of flooding, the state capital, Porto Alegre, is now facing a\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/floods-brazil-rio-grande-do-sul-dda51e5aae0e63a09b9ef64189f553b4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">shortage of drinking water<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Under such critical circumstances, it is crucial to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0understand how this situation escalated so rapidly and consider how intentional\u00a0city planning might prevent it from repeating itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marinabernardes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mariana Bernardes<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is an architect and urbanist from Passo Fundo, in the northern portion of Rio Grande do Sul. The city is also among the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.brasildefators.com.br\/2024\/05\/09\/dos-497-cidades-gauchas-425-ja-foram-atingidas-pela-tragedia-climatica-no-rs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">425 out of 497<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0affected, with floods isolated to\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">certain regions<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">of the city<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bernardes\u2019 work<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0focuses on humanizing structural problems with planning, technical responsibility, and social commitment.
