{"id":68000,"date":"2024-05-10T18:46:24","date_gmt":"2024-05-10T23:46:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=68000"},"modified":"2024-05-10T18:46:24","modified_gmt":"2024-05-10T23:46:24","slug":"uk-farmers-consider-quitting-after-extreme-wet-weather-and-low-profits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=68000","title":{"rendered":"UK farmers consider quitting after extreme wet weather and low profits"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"dcr-1djovmt\" data-gu-name=\"headline\">\n<div class=\"dcr-14emo0l\">\n<div class=\"dcr-1msbrj1\">\n<h3 class=\"dcr-d5iddn\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/article\/2024\/may\/09\/uk-farmers-consider-quitting-after-extreme-wet-weather-and-low-profits\">UK farmers consider quitting after extreme wet weather and low profits<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-1yi1cnj\" data-gu-name=\"standfirst\">\n<div class=\" dcr-cn68uf\">\n<p><strong>Farmers \u2018on the brink\u2019 after record rains, phasing out of EU subsidies and price volatility<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-ch7w1w\" data-gu-name=\"body\">\n<div class=\"dcr-1uybvrg\">\n<div id=\"maincontent\" class=\"dcr-1qg0p6f\">\n<div class=\"article-body-commercial-selector article-body-viewer-selector  dcr-fp1ya\">\n<p class=\"dcr-iy9ec7\">British farmers are considering walking away from their farms as the recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2024\/apr\/10\/uk-food-production-down-record-rainfall-farmers\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">record run of wet weather<\/a>\u00a0has left the sector \u201con the brink\u201d, rural bodies have warned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-iy9ec7\">The Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) and the Soil Association raised concerns over the perilous situations facing many in their industry, with profits being squeezed and extreme weather driven by the climate crisis putting financial and mental strain on farm owners.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-iy9ec7\">Helen Browning, the chief executive of the Soil Association, said: \u201cA lot of farmers are really considering their options, and thinking about walking away from their farms, as they could make far more money doing something else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-iy9ec7\">Browning, who runs a livestock and arable farm in Wiltshire, added: \u201cIf you were economically rational, you wouldn\u2019t farm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-iy9ec7\">The trade bodies\u2019 comments came during a briefing on Thursday run by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) thinktank ahead of the second annual Farm to Fork summit being hosted by Rishi Sunak at No 10 next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-iy9ec7\">The summit is expected to discuss the UK\u2019s future food security against the backdrop of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2024\/apr\/22\/fields-underwater-uk-farmers-navigate-record-rainfall-food-production-crisis-wet-weather\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">extreme wet weather<\/a>\u00a0that has affected four in five farms in the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-iy9ec7\">The UK has been hit by 11 named storms since September, and experienced the wettest 18-month period since records began in 1836.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-iy9ec7\">Tom Clarke, a board member at the AHDB, said the biggest effect on farms this year had been the poor weather, with many farms planting fewer crops, or no crops at all, due to fields being flooded. \u201cIt\u2019s been a hell of a year, I think farmers across the UK are really on the brink, not only mentally, but financially and ecologically as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-iy9ec7\">&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UK farmers consider quitting after extreme wet weather and low profits Farmers \u2018on the brink\u2019 after record rains, phasing out of EU subsidies and price volatility British farmers are considering walking away from their farms as the recent\u00a0record run of wet weather\u00a0has left the sector \u201con the brink\u201d, rural bodies have warned.
