Al Jazeera’s Israeli HQ Raided By Police After Netanyahu Called It “Hamas Mouthpiece”<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n

On Sunday the offices of Al Jazeera in Jerusalem were\u00a0raided by Israeli police<\/strong>, after the Knesset voted unanimously voted to ban the Qatar-based news network.<\/p>\n

The Israeli order effectively\u00a0shuts down all Al Jazeera broadcasts in Israel and the West Bank<\/strong>. To implement the ban, authorities confiscated equipment at the channel’s Jerusalem HQ inside the Ambassador Hotel.<\/p>\n

Additionally Israel will block Al Jazeera’s website after PM Netanyahu alleged that it is a\u00a0“Hamas mouthpiece.”\u00a0<\/strong>He has further claimed that the outlet’s coverage of Gaza has put Israeli troops in danger.<\/p>\n

“Al Jazeera\u00a0reporters\u00a0harmed Israel\u2019s security and incited against soldiers<\/strong>,” Netanyahu said previously. He has for weeks been mounting a public campaign against it.<\/p>\n

Al Jazeera has responded by calling the claim a “dangerous and ridiculous lie” and further said\u00a0“pursue every legal step” to fight being shut down by Israel.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, last year the Biden administration also began complaining about the channel’s coverage, with an October\u00a0Axios<\/em>\u00a0report saying\u00a0<\/a>that Secretary of State Antony Blinken requested that the Qataris “turn down the volume on\u00a0Al Jazeera\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0coverage because it is\u00a0full of anti-Israel incitement<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

The outlet has said in a statement, “Israel\u2019s ongoing suppression of the free press, seen as an effort to conceal its actions in the Gaza Strip, stands in contravention of international and humanitarian law.”<\/p>\n

According to a review by\u00a0Axios<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Israel’s legislative body, the Knesset,\u00a0passed<\/a>\u00a0a measure last month that empowers Israel’s communications minister to take action against any foreign media network that it can prove poses a national security risk.<\/em><\/p>\n

The law gives senior government officials power to\u00a0temporarily shutter foreign news networks on\u00a0national security\u00a0grounds for at least 45 days<\/strong>, but that period can be extended.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
