Exxon\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/node\/5327939\" target=\"_blank\">Lee Raymond<\/a>\u00a0(pictured), however, was an entirely different beast: brash, bullish and\u00a0brutal.<\/p>\n<p>This real life\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._R._Ewing\" target=\"_blank\"><span class=\"caps\">J.R.<\/span>\u00a0Ewing<\/a>\u00a0came from working class stock all the way from the Great Plains and fought his way to the top of the oil giant\u00a0Exxon.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond lived in a 8,642-square-foot, five-bedroom brick-fa\u00e7ade home in Dallas, had around-the-clock access to the Exxon fleet of nine corporate planes for personal and work trips, and enjoyed the protection of an armed bodyguard and chauffeur who was a former New York police\u00a0officer.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"quo\">\u2018<\/span>Oil and Gas\u00a0Purist\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Steve Coll, the author of the award-winning\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2013\/may\/31\/private-empire-exxonmobil-book-review\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power<\/em><\/a>, Raymond ruled the company with a \u201cdrill sergeant-inspired ethos\u201d and he \u201cconsidered himself unabashedly to be a \u2018free-market capitalist\u2019 and resisted government intervention and regulation\u00a0instinctively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raymond was also an \u201coil and gas purist\u201d and, in taking over the company, ended the brief flirtation with environmentalism that had taken place under the former chairman\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clifton_C._Garvin\" target=\"_blank\">Clifton Garvin<\/a>, who had installed solar panels to heat his home&#8217;s swimming\u00a0pool.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This Is The Man Exxon Chose To Lead Its Effort Against Climate Science This\u00a0DeSmog\u00a0UK\u00a0epic history post portrays Lee Raymond, the Texan captain who steered the Exxon ship against the rising tide of climate\u00a0science.
