I\u2019m asking them to give effect to the existing powers and to uphold existing laws. Without their help in very limited and strictly controlled circumstances, encryption is unaccountable,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asio.gov.au\/director-generals-national-press-club-address\">he said.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Burgess was careful to nestle his encryption backdoors plea among seemingly reasonable arguments, such as that encryption provides privacy and is \u201cclearly a good thing\u201d that \u201cenables\u201d transactions (he for some reason chose not to stress that it is in fact necessary for secure transactions).<\/p>\n<p>But, the Australian spy chief went on, encryption also \u201ccreates safe spaces for violent extremists to operate, network and recruit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it is their encrypted messages \u2013 and only theirs, governments around the world promise faithfully \u2013 that the authorities, as \u201cgood actors,\u201d would like to be able to access communications at will.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;click on the above link to read the rest of the article&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australian Authorities Push for Encryption Backdoors After Internet Censorship Attempt Australia ramps up calls for &#8220;accountable encryption,&#8221; pushing tech giants toward compliance with controversial backdoor legislation.
