{"id":67736,"date":"2024-04-29T09:42:15","date_gmt":"2024-04-29T14:42:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=67736"},"modified":"2024-04-29T09:42:15","modified_gmt":"2024-04-29T14:42:15","slug":"survey-finds-that-60-firms-are-responsible-for-half-of-worlds-plastic-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=67736","title":{"rendered":"Survey finds that 60 firms are responsible for half of world\u2019s plastic pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"dcr-1djovmt\" data-gu-name=\"headline\">\n<div class=\"dcr-14emo0l\">\n<div class=\"dcr-1msbrj1\">\n<h3 class=\"dcr-1m6z4y2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2024\/apr\/24\/survey-finds-that-60-firms-are-responsible-for-half-of-worlds-plastic-pollution\">Survey finds that 60 firms are responsible for half of world\u2019s plastic pollution<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-1yi1cnj\" data-gu-name=\"standfirst\">\n<div class=\" dcr-1teqwow\">\n<p><strong>Study confirms Altria, Philip Morris International, Danone, Nestl\u00e9, PepsiCo and Coca-Cola are worst offenders<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-ch7w1w\" data-gu-name=\"body\">\n<div class=\"dcr-v4ay52\">\n<div id=\"maincontent\" class=\"dcr-1qg0p6f\">\n<div class=\"article-body-commercial-selector article-body-viewer-selector  dcr-1g5o3j6\">\n<p class=\"dcr-1myha1i\">Fewer than 60 multinationals are responsible for more than half of the world\u2019s plastic pollution, with six responsible for a quarter of that, based on the findings of a piece of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.adj8275\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">research published on Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1myha1i\">The researchers concluded that for every percentage increase in plastic produced, there was an equivalent increase in plastic pollution in the environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1myha1i\">\u201cProduction really is pollution,\u201d says one of the study\u2019s authors,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.ca\/citations?user=x1i7OTwAAAAJ&amp;hl=en\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Lisa Erdle<\/a>, director of science at the non-profit The 5 Gyres Institute.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1myha1i\">An international team of volunteers collected and surveyed more than 1,870,000 items of plastic waste across 84 countries over five years: the bulk of the rubbish collected was single-use packaging for food, beverage, and tobacco products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1myha1i\">Less than half of that plastic litter had discernible branding that could be traced back to the company that produced the packaging;
