In September, former climate envoy Xie Zhenhua told the COP28 climate talks that it would be &#8220;<a class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__inherit-color__3208F text__inherit-font__1Y8w3 text__inherit-size__1DZJi link__link__3Ji6W link__underline_default__2prE_\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/climate-energy\/china-climate-envoy-says-phasing-out-fossil-fuels-unrealistic-2023-09-22\/\" data-testid=\"Link\">unrealistic<\/a>\u00a0to completely phase out fossil fuel energy&#8221;.<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body__element__2p5pI\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-4\">China will continue using coal despite a massive ramp-up in renewable generation, which will make up 88% of China&#8217;s power generation mix in 2050, the report predicts.<\/div>\n<div class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\" data-testid=\"paragraph-5\">China approved another 114GW of\u00a0<a class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__inherit-color__3208F text__inherit-font__1Y8w3 text__inherit-size__1DZJi link__link__3Ji6W link__underline_default__2prE_\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/climate-energy\/china-2023-coal-power-approvals-rose-putting-climate-targets-risk-2024-02-22\/\" data-testid=\"Link\">coal power plants<\/a>\u00a0last year, up 10% from 2022, and the iron and steel sectors are on track to overtake power as the biggest consumers of coal by mid-century.
