Big Tech Sponsors Event With Canadian Pro-Censorship Justice Minister Advocating Online Censorship<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Canada\u2019s government, represented by \u201ccaptain of censorship\u201d Arif Virani \u2013 the country\u2019s justice minister and attorney general, will use an upcoming event as the opportunity to once again push for more speech-restrictive legislation, allegedly solely in order to deal with online \u201charm and hate speech.\u201d<\/p>\n

No surprise there, but the list of the sponsors of the event \u2013 dubbed, \u201cWhere Online Harms Have Real World Consequences: The Case for Legislating Against Harm and Hate\u201d \u2013 is interesting. It includes Meta, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).<\/p>\n

There could be different interpretations of this, one being that the giants want online speech regulated \u201cto entrench their positions and keep out dissenting views\u201d \u2013 as Rumble CEO Chris Pavlovski put it.<\/p>\n

Or it could be that Canada\u2019s relentless policies damaging these companies\u2019 business interests in the process of restricting speech are motivating the likes of Meta and Amazon to try to stay on the authorities\u2019 good side, including through sponsorships.<\/p>\n

And, two wrong things get to be true at the same time, so we may be witnessing some combination thereof.<\/p>\n

In any case, the Empire Club, where the gathering is to be held, announced it by saying participants will be able to learn about the government\u2019s plans to \u201ctame some of the worst excesses of life online, and protect the rights of all Canadians who wish to express themselves without fear.\u201d<\/p>\n

All Canadians, that is, except those Virani\u00a0would like to be put under house arrest or cut off their internet access<\/a>\u00a0as a kind of dystopian \u201cpreventive measure\u201d \u2013 namely, when there is \u201cfear\u201d they might commit whatever\u2019s designated as hate propaganda or crime, at some point in the future.<\/p>\n
