Brazil Targets Twitter Files Author Who Revealed Censorship Orders<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Twitter Files journalist Michael Shellenberger, who has\u00a0recently been covering<\/a>\u00a0the public clash between X owner Elon Musk and the President of Brazil\u2019s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and Supreme Federal Court (STF) justice Alexandre de Moraes, is now likely to himself be targeted by one of those courts, the STF.<\/p>\n

If the court starts a criminal prosecution against Shellenberger, it will be at the request of Brazil\u2019s Attorney General Jorge Messias, who claims that there is information proving that the US journalist has committed a \u201cprobable crime\u201d against the rule of law and institutions, along with an \u201cattempt to destabilize the democratic state.\u201d<\/p>\n

Messias further accuses Shellenberger of disclosing confidential information related to\u00a0the events of January 8, 2023.<\/a><\/p>\n

The memo sent to STF says that the journalist\u00a0on April 3 published,<\/a>\u00a0as part of the Twitter Files that concern Brazil, a number of emails exchanged by the court and X employees, which are referred to as \u201cconfidential files.\u201d<\/p>\n

And, of course, Shellenberger is \u201cguilty\u201d of making accusations against\u00a0Moraes<\/a>, Messias wrote, remarking that the journalist\u00a0\u2013 \u201cattributes authoritarian and anti-democratic measures\u201d to the STF justice.<\/p>\n

Shellenberger has denied these claims made against him, in turn describing Messias\u2019 move as an \u201cabuse of power,\u201d urging the country\u2019s Congress to investigate and finally end such conduct, and noting that in a democracy, there is no law against \u201cdestabilizing the democratic state\u201d through non-violent means.<\/p>\n

That would pretty much be what politics is all about \u2013 given that in this case, the term \u201cstate\u201d clearly refers to those currently in power.<\/p>\n
