Mining those metals from the Earth creates damage and pollution that threaten ecosystems and communities. Until recently, no one really knew. Data on more obscure metals like neodymium and palladium, which play small but critical roles in established and emerging green energy technologies, has been especially hard to come by.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 fnnahv\">Now, the United Nations has taken a first step toward filling in these data gaps with the latest installment of its periodic report on e-waste around the world. Released last month, the new\u00a0<a class=\"sc-1out364-0 dPMosf sc-145m8ut-0 jCErAQ js_link\" href=\"https:\/\/ewastemonitor.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/GEM_2024_18-03_web_page_per_page_web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ga=\"[[&quot;Embedded Url&quot;,&quot;External link&quot;,&quot;https:\/\/ewastemonitor.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/GEM_2024_18-03_web_page_per_page_web.pdf&quot;,{&quot;metric25&quot;:1}]]\">Global E-Waste Monitor<\/a>\u00a0shows the staggering scale of the e-waste crisis, which reached a new record in 2022 when the world threw out 62 million metric tons of electronics.
