{"id":67265,"date":"2024-04-11T17:28:11","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T22:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=67265"},"modified":"2024-04-11T17:28:11","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T22:28:11","slug":"worlds-biggest-economies-pumping-billions-into-fossil-fuels-in-poor-nations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=67265","title":{"rendered":"World\u2019s biggest economies pumping billions into fossil fuels in poor nations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"dcr-1djovmt\" data-gu-name=\"headline\">\n<div class=\"dcr-14emo0l\">\n<div class=\"dcr-1msbrj1\">\n<h3 class=\"dcr-1m6z4y2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2024\/apr\/09\/worlds-biggest-economies-pumping-billions-into-fossil-fuels-in-poor-nations\">World\u2019s biggest economies pumping billions into fossil fuels in poor nations<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-1yi1cnj\" data-gu-name=\"standfirst\">\n<div class=\" dcr-1teqwow\">\n<p><strong>G20 countries spent $142bn in three years to expand operations despite a G7 pledge to stop doing so, study finds<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"dcr-ch7w1w\" data-gu-name=\"body\">\n<div class=\"dcr-v4ay52\">\n<div id=\"maincontent\" class=\"dcr-lw02qf\">\n<div class=\"article-body-commercial-selector article-body-viewer-selector  dcr-1g5o3j6\">\n<p class=\"dcr-4cudl2\">The world\u2019s biggest economies have continued to finance the expansion of fossil fuels in poor countries to the tune of billions of dollars, despite their commitments on the climate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-4cudl2\">The G20 group of developed and developing economies, and the multilateral development banks they fund, put $142bn (\u00a3112bn) into fossil fuel developments overseas from 2020 to 2022, according to estimates compiled by the campaigning groups Oil Change International (OCI) and Friends of the Earth US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-4cudl2\">Canada, Japan and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/south-korea\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">South Korea<\/a>\u00a0were the biggest sources of such finance in the three years studied, and gas received more funding than either coal or oil.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-4cudl2\">The G7 group of biggest economies, to which Japan and Canada belong,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/may\/30\/g7-countries-to-stop-funding-fossil-fuel-development-overseas#:~:text=The%20world's%20biggest%20economies%20are,meet%20the%20world's%20climate%20targets.\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">pledged in 2022 to halt overseas funding of fossil fuels<\/a>. But while funding for coal has rapidly diminished, finance for oil and gas projects has continued at a strong pace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-4cudl2\">Some of the money is going to other developed economies, including Australia, but much of it is to the developing world. However, richer middle income countries still receive more finance than the poorest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-4cudl2\">The most\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/priceofoil.org\/content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/G7-Public-Finance-Briefing_OCI_April2023.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">recent G7 pledge, in the study,\u00a0<\/a>is to phase out all overseas fossil fuel funding by the end of 2022.
