When Duane Riley turns on his taps, they shudder loudly from the air flowing through the pipes. There\u2019s often no water trickling at all.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s ironic, because Johannesburg, South Africa\u2019s biggest city, has plenty of water at the moment \u2014 authorities and water companies just can\u2019t seem to get it to where it\u2019s needed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere have been times where we\u2019ve had no water, but I\u2019ve had a river gushing down my driveway, because there was a leak at the top of our street,\u201d Riley told CNN. It took authorities 14 days to fix it, he said.<\/p>\n

Joburgers \u2014\u00a0as residents here call themselves \u2014 are no strangers to water scarcity. South Africa is naturally dry, and the climate crisis has hit the nation many times with crippling drought.<\/p>\n

Johannesburg is one of many of the world\u2019s big cities that are dealing with a perfect storm of crumbling critical infrastructure, lack of maintenance, corruption and insufficient planning for population growth.<\/p>\n

While drought can hurt the city\u2019s reservoirs,\u00a0the dams are currently full, authorities say. But climate change is making things worse in another way \u2014 officials\u00a0say a weeks-long heat wave is boosting water demand in enormous volumes. In February, Southern Africa saw temperatures of\u00a04 to 5 degrees Celsius (around 7 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit)\u00a0<\/strong>above average<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At around 9 p.m., Riley\u2019s home typically loses water until around six in the morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut there have been multiple times where we\u2019ve been without water for five, seven days,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
