The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/21\/us\/politics\/obama-administration-unveils-federal-fracking-regulations.html?smid=fb-share&amp;_r=2\" target=\"_blank\">Obama Administration says it is hoping to set an example<\/a>\u00a0for states to follow when setting their own fracking standards, but if that\u2019s the case, the federal government actually has plenty of opportunity to lead by example when it comes to reining in carbon emissions from fossil fuel development.<\/p>\n<p>According to a new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/green\/report\/2015\/03\/19\/108713\/cutting-greenhouse-gas-from-fossil-fuel-extraction-on-federal-lands-and-waters\/\" target=\"_blank\">report by the Center for American Progress and The Wilderness Society<\/a>, there is \u201ca blind spot in\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0efforts to address climate change.\u201d Fossil fuel extraction on public lands, the source of almost 30% of\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0energy production, is responsible for more than a fifth of total\u00a0<span class=\"caps\">U.S.<\/span>\u00a0greenhouse gas emissions, the carbon equivalent of having 280 million more cars on the road.
