Minimisation Is The New Denial – climate scientists and the false hope of net-zero<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

The temperature extremes of 2023 and those coming in 2024, tell us we face the possibility of\u00a0climate catastrophes<\/strong>\u00a0that cause the\u00a0collapse of whole societies<\/strong>\u00a0and threaten the lives of millions, not at some distant point in our children\u2019s futures but\u00a0within our own lifetimes<\/strong>. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\u00a0(IPCC)<\/strong>\u00a0and public-facing scientists have raised awareness and concern but they failed to predict the speed of these accelerating changes and now\u00a0minimise<\/strong>\u00a0the immediate threats they pose.<\/p>\n

In 2023 the average global temperature was close to\u00a01.5\u00b0C<\/strong>\u00a0above the 1850\u20131900 baseline, the limit which the\u00a02015<\/strong>\u00a0Paris COP21 climate summit told us we had to avoid breaching\u200a\u2014\u200aby the end of the century<\/strong>\u200a\u2014\u200ato avoid calamitous global consequences. The 12 months to the end of February 2024 took us to\u00a01.56\u00b0C\u00a0<\/strong>and we\u2019re still climbing fast. It is true, as the \u2018expert minimisers\u2019 rush to say, that when the current \u2018El Ni\u00f1o\u2019 ends temperatures will dip down but they will not get much below 1.5\u00b0C again, if ever. These extremes make a mockery of the\u00a0underestimates<\/strong>\u00a0in climate scientists\u2019 models, on which humanity\u2019s\u00a0inadequate<\/strong>\u00a0climate plans still rely.<\/p>\n

This simple, devastating information should be on everyone\u2019s mind, everywhere. Yes, terrible conflicts and injustices rage across the planet but none of them, with no disrespect to the suffering of the people involved, presents the same scale of risks as climate change, not even close. Everyone should be connecting this alarming heating to the increasing number of ever-worsening extreme events they cause, happening on every continent, plus those soon to come\u200a\u2014\u200abut they are not. Instead, all politicians, the media and most people\u00a0still\u00a0<\/strong>just don\u2019t get that we are\u00a0right now\u00a0<\/strong>in dangerous, \u2018uncharted waters<\/strong>\u2019 (the latest climate clich\u00e9 no-one listens to)\u200a\u2014\u200awithout a paddle.<\/p>\n
