The key takeaway:\u00a0<strong>naturally-occurring hydrogen is far more abundant near the Earth&#8217;s surface than previously known.\u00a0<\/strong>Researchers say the planet holds upwards of 5 trillion tons of hydrogen, trapped in underground pockets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost hydrogen is likely inaccessible, but\u00a0<strong>a few percent recovery would still supply all projected demand \u2014 500 million tons a year \u2014 for hundreds of years,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>said Geoffrey Ellis, a USGS research geologist,\u00a0as reported by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/81819f64-1025-489b-959a-c3d9b14cc77a\"><em>Financial Times<\/em><\/a>. The supply has gone largely unnoticed due to scientists&#8217; earlier\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/91017369\/gold-hydrogen-is-found-naturally-around-the-world-can-it-help-us-move-us-away-from-fossil-fuels\">assumptions<\/a>\u00a0about how natural hydrogen is formed and how it&#8217;s degraded.\u00a0<strong>&#8220;We haven\u2019t looked for hydrogen resources in the right places with the right tools,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0said Ellis.<\/p>\n<p>Better-equipped and more enlightened, geologists are discovering hydrogen reserves in many places, including a chromite mine in Albania from which 200 tons are flowing every year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-img inline-images image-style-inline-images\" role=\"group\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.zerohedge.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/inline_image_mobile\/public\/inline-images\/bfd736eb5202ca6c965e217b6d411552.jpg?itok=6hMfTG-w\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"f758e4d0-a50e-48ad-a4c9-9f05327ae730\" data-responsive-image-style=\"inline_images\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Today,\u00a0<strong>hydrogen used as a fuel or industrial material is primarily produced by chemically altering gas<\/strong>\u00a0principally composed of methane.
