Now, according to a massive new study in\u00a0<a title=\"Nature: Long-term decline of the Amazon carbon sink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v519\/n7543\/full\/nature14283.html\" target=\"_blank\">Nature<\/a>\u00a0journal by more than 90 scientists, the\u00a0<a title=\"EurekAlert: Amazon's carbon uptake declines as trees die faster\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/emb_releases\/2015-03\/uol-acu031615.php\" target=\"_blank\">rate of withdrawal has fallen<\/a>\u00a0to around half that total.<\/p>\n<p>Fossil fuel emissions from Latin American countries are now running at more than a billion tonnes of CO<sub>2<\/sub>. So the region is putting more greenhouse gas into the atmosphere than it is taking out.<\/p>\n<p>The finding is ominous. The Amazon rainforest has always been a big item in the climate modellers\u2019 carbon budget \u2212 the calculation of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels burned, set against the natural absorption of the same trace gases by the biosphere.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Unique research<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The implication now is that the forest is no longer a carbon \u201csink\u201d that that can be relied upon to take up a predictable proportion of fossil fuel emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The conclusion is the outcome of a unique international research network\u2019s 30-year study of 189,000 individual trees in 321 plots of forest dotted across six million square kilometres in eight South American countries.
