{"id":66406,"date":"2023-12-24T16:18:26","date_gmt":"2023-12-24T21:18:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=66406"},"modified":"2023-12-24T16:18:26","modified_gmt":"2023-12-24T21:18:26","slug":"a-textbook-sudden-stratospheric-warming-event-appears-to-be-unfolding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/olduvai.ca\/?p=66406","title":{"rendered":"A &#8220;Textbook&#8221; Sudden Stratospheric Warming Event Appears To Be Unfolding"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"ArticleFull_header__z0vIZ\">\n<h3 class=\"ArticleFull_title__FDrpw\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerohedge.com\/weather\/textbook-sudden-stratospheric-warming-event-appears-be-unfolding\">A &#8220;Textbook&#8221; Sudden Stratospheric Warming Event Appears To Be Unfolding<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/header>\n<div class=\"NodeContent_mainContent__2jyAd\">\n<div class=\"NodeContent_body__HBEFs NodeBody_container__eeFKv\">\n<p>Meteorologists on social media channel X are posting weather models about the increasing threat of a so-called sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) over the Arctic, which could unleash wintry weather across the eastern half of the US in the new year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;A textbook sudden stratospheric warming event looks to be unfolding,&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0private weather forecaster\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bamwxcom\/status\/1737842872362455403?s=20\">BAM Weather<\/a>\u00a0(BAMWX).<\/p>\n<p>Judah Cohen, Ph.D. and an atmospheric and environmental scientist who studies the polar vortex, told FOX Weather an SSW event takes &#8220;about two weeks for the effects of the sudden stratospheric warming to impact our weather.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cohen expects that cold air will pour into the Lower 48 in the new year, although the specifics of the event remain uncertain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/yaleclimateconnections.org\/2023\/12\/how-will-el-nino-affect-the-u-s-this-winter\/\">Yale Climate Connections<\/a>\u00a0wrote in a recent note, &#8220;The odds of a snow-favoring East Coast cold wave will be boosted if a sudden stratospheric warming happens to develop in January.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sudden stratospheric warmings involve a rapid and dramatic rise in temperature \u2014 as much as 80 degrees Fahrenheit \u2014 within the polar stratosphere, together with a disruption in the stratospheric polar vortex. That disruption typically either splits the vortex or pushes it southward, along with associated Arctic air masses,&#8221; the weather service ran by Yale Center for Environmental Communication.
