In 2016, residents left because of the effects of climate change in what was labeled the &#8220;first federally recognized climate-displaced population&#8221; in the United States.<span class=\"pt-4 block text-xs uppercase text-grey\">PHOTO BY C\u00c9CILE CLOCHERET \/ AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content relative flex flex-wrap font-serif\">\n<div class=\"w-full text-lg md:text-1xl leading-normal md:leading-normal py-10 print:py-4 print:text-base\">\n<div class=\"article subhead-lyon\">\n<article>\n<div class=\"max-w-6xl mx-auto\">\n<div class=\"max-w-article mx-auto px-4 dropcap\">\n<p>Global temperatures have reached\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/2019\/8\/2\/headlines\/july_2019_was_officially_the_hottest_month_ever_recorded\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new record highs<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CxInYROg96z\/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flooding<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2023\/aug\/17\/hawaii-fires-maui-water-rights-disaster-capitalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wildfires<\/a>\u00a0reaped widespread destruction this summer, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.su.se\/english\/news\/it-s-raining-pfas-even-in-antarctica-and-on-the-tibetan-plateau-rainwater-is-unsafe-to-drink-1.620735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rainwater was declared, for the first time, unfit for human consumption around the globe<\/a>. Amid these crises, I\u00a0delved into two novels portraying our current and developing ecological and societal crises:\u00a0<em>The Ministry for the Future<\/em>\u00a0by Kim Stanley Robinson and\u00a0<em>The Deluge<\/em>\u00a0by Stephen\u00a0Markley.<\/p>\n<p>Reading fiction about ecological crisis and societal collapse\u2009\u2014\u2009including heavily researched books like\u00a0<em>Deluge\u00a0<\/em>(Simon\u00a0<span class=\"amp\">&amp;<\/span>\u00a0Schuster,\u00a0<span class=\"numbers\">2023<\/span>)<em>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Ministry<\/em>\u00a0(Hachette,\u00a0<span class=\"numbers\">2020<\/span>) that aim to realistically paint future scenarios, as well as young adult stories (often with elements of magic or science fiction)\u2009\u2014\u2009can be useful for combating the persistent culture of denial of current conditions.
